The library is a great resource of the club, with more than 400 books plus magazines, journals, DVDs and videos – all related in one way or another to cars with an obvious emphasis on MGs.
These are available for members to borrow at no charge, with a nominal borrowing period of 4-6 weeks.
Library news for October 2018
Magazines:
As I mentioned at the October meeting, I’ve had a major sort-out of the magazines in the rack at the clubrooms. Basically I kept the 2018 and 2017 editions of all in the rack (though not all copies of all title are there). All the others I have temporarily put in the library, some in a bag, some in a stack on the table.
If you think there may be a pre-2017 magazine you would like, please look through and help yourself. Any left after December 30 will go into recycling . . .
One important note: the magazines for ‘disposal’ fall into two categories: some are just not particularly recent but some are 20-30 years old, so if any club member feels they should be kept for historic interest please let me know (stephen@smarlow.com.au or 0409 600 557) so I don’t toss them out.

Donation to the MGCCSA of Mr R S Brown's Trophies.
Dear Christina and Trevor,
On behalf of the Secretary, Arthur Ruediger, and the Members of the MG Car Club of South Australia we wish to thank you for your generous donation of Bob’s trophies. It is especially significant this year as we are celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Club that your father was so instrumental in forming.I have arranged for the permanent display of the trophies in one of our main display cabinets in the Clubroom. They are a real reminder of the history of our Club, and I can assure you that many Members, particularly those more recent, will be interested in them.
I have attached 4 photos of the display, at the front of the main Clubroom area where all our meetings are held. I took the liberty of finding a quotation in Barry Bahnisch’s book “Marque of Respect” that was written for our Club’s 50th Anniversary, where the inaugural Committee Members were noted in some detail. The paragraph referring to your father is a quote from a newspaper after his untimely passing in 1958,
“Mr Brown was a foundation member of the MG Car Club and held office as President since its inception. During this time he devoted himself whole-heartedly to the progress of the Club. Over the past two seasons he was active in car trials and his example and encouragement of younger drivers has done much to further the cause of motor sport in South Australia. He was admired and respected by all with whom he came in contact.”
I have included this quote together with a couple of the photos from the book on a display card in the cabinet with the trophies.
I am sure you will be pleased to know that the Club, formed all those years ago, continues to prosper – a great legacy from the men and women, together with your father, who started the Club.

This quarter’s report is a month late (my apologies but I was otherwise occupied!) Firstly, I would like to thank Graham Hamilton, erstwhile MGA owner, for a second box of interesting and useful books, including Panel Beating and a Troubleshooting Handbook, and thanks to Neil Stagg, Historic Sub Committee member, for his donation of a box of lovely books, to be included in our Club Library.
Other additions to the Club Library this Quarter include the following 5 books, now ready for Members to borrow.
My Incredible Life on 2 and 4 Wheels – John Surtees.
This book is a photographic memoir by the only man to have won World Championships on motorcycles and in cars. Containing nearly 300 photographs from Surtees' own collection as well as from the world's finest motorsport picture libraries, this book presents a complete visual record of Surtees' life accompanied by fascinating commentary written in collaboration with co-author Mike Nicks. Chapters cover his formative years and the incredible motorcycle racing years culminating in his dominating top-level motorcycle racing for five years with Italian team MV Agusta, taking seven World Championship titles on 500cc and 350cc bikes. He then went on to overlap his motorcycle racing with 17 car races and 4 F1 World Championship events. From 1963 to 1966, he drove for Ferrari becoming F1 World Champion. After Ferrari, Honda invited him to develop F1 cars for 2 years, with victory in the Italian GP at Monza the highlight. He then became a constructor in single seater racing, Team Surtees. Royalties from sales of the book go to the Henry Surtees Foundation, which was set up to honour the memory of John's son Henry, who was killed in a freak accident at Brands Hatch in 2009.
Klemantaski: Master Motorsports Photographer
The next best thing to attending a race in person is the opportunity to relive it through high-quality photography. Most images merely document the event--rare are those photographs that capture the event. Louis Klemantaski inserted himself into the action - whether that meant standing just off-course in a corner, roaming the paddock and infield, or riding shotgun in a Mille Miglia race car. In the process, he captured some of the most iconic images in motorsports, preserving these exciting events for all time. He is one of history's greatest motorsports photographers. The immediacy and excitement his images evoke are unsurpassed. He worked during what is often considered racing's golden era, that period immediately just prior to WWII through the early 1970s when the sport was still the province of passion and daring, before huge budgets and massive sponsorship forever changed its tenor. Klemantaski's subjects spanned road racing, Grand Prix, and F1 competition.
This is the only book in print devoted to the photographer's full body of work; see the golden age of racing through hundreds of Louis Klemantaski's greatest images that have been collected to provide the opportunity to enjoy his key work in a single volume. No racing or photography fan will want to miss borrowing this book!
Mike Hawthorn One Glorious Hour: A True Story - Author: Don Shaw
This is a story of, arguably, the most compelling and moving sports drama of all time. It matters because it is a testament to the eternal values of friendship, honesty of purpose, and self-sacrifice. It is played out in the bloody arena of the highly dangerous Grand Prix motor racing of the 50’s; an age in which the drivers were still amateurs and the sport controllers and team owners untainted by big money. Inspiring as it is tragic; the hero of classical proportion is faced with a terrible dilemma. Rarely does a true life story match the best of fiction. This book does just that.
Driven by Desire: The Desiree Wilson Story
The story of the driver rated by many as the best woman ever to race cars, and the most capable ever to have driven in Formula One. Her 50-year career began at the age of five in South Africa, moving to Holland and England and then the USA, before gaining renewed life at the famous Goodwood Revival historic race events. This fascinating story shows that a woman can, and did, fight her way to the top of motorsport.
Memories of James Hunt: Anecdotes and insights from those who knew him - Author: Christopher Hilton
This is the intimate portrait of James Hunt put together from responses to the question: what is your strongest memory of him? This edition was published ahead of the release of the movie Rush, the feature film that tells the story of the 1976 World Championship battle between James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Hunt – public school hell-raiser, loved and feared broadcaster, an enigma even to his friends – was one of the very few people who lived life as he wanted to. In this book of reminiscences from those who knew him and worked with him, all sorts of surprising material emerges, forming a rounded picture of this colourful character. For those of us who went to the Club event to see the film, this is a particularly interesting little book.

Please feel free to borrow books from the Library whenever the Clubrooms are open, any of our Executive Committee Members can issue (and return) books.

As you would all know now, we have relocated the Club Library to the front room opposite the Office. The catalog is on the web site and you can also browse it on line on the Club computer in the Main Room, or better still, look along the shelves to see what we have.
We now have factory workshop manuals for practically all the MG models including our moderns. There are also restoration manuals and “Original” books that detail the standards and differences in models. These are in the main right hand cup-board. The next one along has books that relate to MGs and their history. The extreme left hand cupboard has the large format books and the videos and DVDs. And the next along from the left has general motoring books of all sorts.
We recently acquired the following three interesting titles – now available for borrowing.
Le Mans '55 - The crash that changed the face of motor racing.
In brief - the worst crash in motor racing history - killing more than 80 people - was produced by a ferocious and haunting combination of circumstances: nationalism, raw speed, the nature of a 24-hour race, and chance. This is why and how it happened.
The Author - Christopher Hilton is a leading authority and writer on con-temporary and historic motorsport and has written more than 30 books on it. He also writes on cricket, one of his other great passions. He has specialised in biographies of modern Formula 1 drivers like Michael Schumacher and the late Ayrton Senna, but also produced a ground-breaking study of the Donington Grands Prix of 1937 and 1938.
The Jack Brabham Story:
In brief - The true story behind our motor racing legend Sir Jack Brabham. The book presents a fascinating account of life, including unpublished material detailing his early racing ca-reer on two wheels and four in Australia. It covers his incredible career from 1953-1970 which saw him win three Formula 1 Driver's World Champion-ship titles, multiple F2 Champion-ships, become the world's first dominant manufacturer of single-seater racing cars and the first - and so far only - driver to win a World Title in a car bearing his own name. The book is lavishly illustrated with photo-graphs, memorabilia and superb full-color photographs of his racing cars. The book is highly entertaining and detailed.
The Author - Doug Nye is a world au-thority on motor racing history. Since 1970 he has written more than 70 books on the subject, including The Grand Prix Car, Lotus, BRM, Cooper, Ferrari and Mc Laren. He became the first ever three-time winner of the Guild of Motoring Writers' prestigious Montagu Trophy for the best motoring book of the year, and has twice won their Dreyfus Trophy for the year's outstanding journalistic effort by a motoring writer.
Nye is a regular contribu-tor to several automotive magazines and is a historical consultant to the Donington Collection of Grand Prix Racing Cars. He is also a racing car consultant to Bonhams auctioneers and is an Associate Member of the British Racing Driver's Club. His nar-rative will appeal to both racing enthusiasts and a general readership.
The Mighty MG Magnettes of 33 - The Cars, The Drivers, The Mystery:
In brief - Captain George Eyston called the Mille Miglia race in Italy as “the most strenuous, possibly the most dangerous and certainly the most exciting of all the events in the calendar of speed.” With the construction of the MG Magnette Super-charged, now simply called the K3, in late 1932 the British motor racing community had a car which could compete with the new generation of light racing cars coming out of Europe, particularly Italy. Two proto-types were built, then three cars were constructed and prepared for the Mille Miglia race. This is the story of those great MGs which swept the 1100cc class and the team prize at the Mille Miglia in 1933. It is also the story of the other races of ‟33, including the Ulster Tourist Trophy, and how the great Tazio Nuvolari was secured to race the Mille Miglia winning car in the greatest event on the British racing calendar.
But what happened to these five great cars and their drivers?
This book tells the story of MG in 1933, why the MG K3 was such a re-markable car, and how these great cars, particularly the Mille Miglia and Ulster TT winning car was almost lost but for its rediscovery.
The author - Graeme Cocks of WA, searched archives in Europe, North America and Australia and spoke to dozens of people around the World to discover the story of the mighty MG Magnettes of 1933. He has put together a story of elation and tragedy, of success and failure, and he has examined the mystery of the ultimate fate of arguably the greatest MG of all, K3003.

The new Library Catalog system is now up to date, all 350+ books. I have sent a copy of the online catalog to the Web editor to put onto our Club web site for you to browse at home. You can also visit the Club to browse the cupboards, now in the Brigid McQuire Room (front room opposite the Club Office).
The Library wil be open on all Monthly Genral Meeting nights and also on Noggin n Natter nights for borrowing and returning books. The loan period will be 4 weeks ie: the next MGM. Books can also be borrowed or returned on Historic Registration Saturday mornings. The only people who have access to loan or return books are the Librarian, current Committee members and the Historic Director.
We have many useful and interesting books for the use of Club members, including workshop, both factory and Haynes type, for almost all models of MG and restoration guides for the most models. We also have Essential Buying Guides and other information for those wanting to expand their MG collections! These are housed in one cupboard for ease of access.
In the remaining three cupboards we have a large and varied collection of books relating to classic cars, driving, racing etc. These include a number of very rare and out of print books written by the late Prince Bira and his brother Prince Chula of Siam (now Thailand). Some of you may remember the connection to Prince Bira if the MGK3 previously owned by Phil Bradey, now in the loving hands of John and Helen Gillett of Victoria.
There are also books written by Barrie Lyndon in the early 30's including Combat and Circuit Dust. For the more modern taste there are books by Jeremy Clarkson, The Man in the White Suit (STIG) and TV cars.
We have magnificient books of the world's greatest cars, stories of the old days at Abingdon and Oxford in the UK and books relating to other wonderful marques. We have driver's biographies and books about the Peking to Paris and many more.
We have been lucky that many membes have donated beautiful and valuable books to our Library over the years, and I urge any Club members who are looking to reduce their personal libraries to consider donating their beloved volumes to us, where they will be appreciated and loved for many more years to come.
My special thanks goes to Graham Hamilton, well known to MGA and Magnette register members, who donated three large boxes of beautiful books recently that included The Legendary Monza Grand Prix (fantastic colour photographs in a large format book). Great Cars by Ralph Stein, Jim Clark's biography and many more.
