Round 5 of MSCA Super Sprint held at Mallala MotorSport Park, 28 Oct 2018
This was the last round for the year. Mallala at this time of year can be cool in the morning and warming up in the afternoon. We were greeted by the smell of freshly cooked bacon and eggs, cooked and prepared by ‘chef’ Jamie Manning. It sure makes early starts easier with some food in the belly!
A good turn out of cars and members including Martin Ball, a new member competing in his Rover SD1.
Round 1 went with many setting good times and getting the cob webs out. Unfortunately for Rodney Gibb, the mighty ZT V8 had a driveshaft vibration forcing an early retirement.
Round 2 and the cars and drivers getting better times. Unfortunately for Tim Edmonds in his GT V8 had brakes fading and withdrew.
Round 3 after lunch and the sprinting getting more competitive. Unfortunately Nick Philips in his MGB suffered a driveline failure and withdrew. During this round Gary Bolt’s GT V8 had problems with the throttle cable, but was able to do a temporary fix and continue on.
Round 4 had some competitors finishing for the day, but the others continued on.
Competitors were supported by family and friends; Sandra Cardnell, Faye Edwards, Edwards family, Jamie Manning, Heather Bolt, Alexander Hick. All provided interesting comments and feedback.

Thanks to the MSCA for a great Motor Sport sprint season during 2018. In 2019 the 1st sprint is in March, with a proposed round at the ‘Bend’ in June.

On Sunday 11 March, Round 1 of the 2018 MSCA Super Sprint series was run at Mallala.
A field of eighty nine sprinters lined up for the day with nine MGCC members among them. MGCC members entered six MGs, an MGB V8, a ZR, a TC, an MGB GTV8 and two MGFs. The other cars were a Lancer EVO8, Lotus Exige and Hyundai Excel.
A further eight MGCC members were involved in running the event with Berry as the starter, Bev in timing, Tim scrutineering and and five in the flaggy bunker helping to make the event flow.
It was great to see new member John Parmiter bring out his MGF for a run and despite the odd spin he had a good time. It is understood he has done a lap or two at Mallala before, have raced Alan Cardnell back in the day.
Nick Micklem set out with a new set of tyres for the weekend and was quickly onto his previous best but slowed down once he started to push.
Garry Bolt’s V8 didn’t want to rev but despite pulling nothing over 4,500RPM he did get under 1 minute 30 seconds.
There was a general complaint of the track being slippery, particularly after a Torana applied dust settling oil to the surface.
The day was mild and very pleasant to be sitting around watching or flagging but apparently quite warm in the cars.
The Manning - Stephenson rivalry continued with Dick and Scott battling for times. Unfortunately the Excel was off the pace on the day but needs to be right for the Excel support race at Bathurst Six Hour at Easter.
Thanks to the officials, drivers and supporters who came out for a great day. It was an entertaining day with great competition and all finished well in time for the curfew.

South Australian Hillclimb Championship 2017
On the weekend of September 9 & 10 the SAHC was run at Collingrove with 98 entries. Most were from SA and two from NSW.
The weather was great with cold mornings turning into fine and mild days. The track even warmed a little on Saturday to allow some good runs.
The fastest time for the weekend, and outright champion, was a 29.86 sec run by David Mahon in his Ninja GA7.
As usual, the Collingrove track is technically challenging and after each run you can always imagine a better way to do it next time. Implementing those thoughts is the issue.
The event flowed well with eight official runs on Saturday and five on Sunday before the final shoot out of the top runners.
MG Car Club SA was well represented with five members competing, in four different classes, and two of them in MGs.

Laurie Houghton won the Production Sports 3,001 and over class with his best run in the MGB V8 on Saturday afternoon against Anthony and James Norris in a Nissan 200SX.
Lindsay Hick won the Group Lb class in the TC Special with his fastest time coming on the last run on Saturday afternoon. The TC sounded and looked great in light weight form without mudguards.
John Davies had his Lancer EVO8 flying over the weekend and ultimately won the class almost a second ahead of the next competitor in his class with his best run coming on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately John’s final run on Sunday afternoon did not end well when he ran off the track at turn 2 and hit the Armco quite heavily. John was physically fine but the car will require some work before the Australian Champs in October.
Scott and Murray Stephenson shared Murray’s Honda Civic in the Improved Production under 1,600cc class against a Datsun 1200 from NSW. Scott won the class comfortably with the Datsun placed between him and Murray. The Honda managed twenty six runs up the hill over the two days and, although a little smokey at one stage, it never missed a beat. All three in class waited until the final run on Sunday to put in their best times.
Hillclimbing is as much about socialising as motorsport and it was a great weekend of talking and watching. A number of club members came out to watch including Brian Golding, Stan Ward and John Miles and Wayne Hough was taking photos. Tim Edmonds was Chief Scrutineer for the weekend.
Thanks to the members who came out and to the Sporting Car Club for a well run event. Particularly thanks to all the officials who make this happen and allow us to have some fun.
The Australian Hillclimb Championship will be held at Collingrove over the weekend of 28 and 29 October. There will also be a practice day on the Friday. This event attracts the top guns of hillclimbing from around the country and is always spectacular. Come and support the South Australians and particularly the MGCCSA members.

MSCA Super Sprint Round 4 2017 from Murray Stephenson
On Sunday 27 August, Round 4 of the MSCA Super Sprint series was run at Mallala. The event included a Come & Try component again led by Bruce and Petrina Astbury from the MSCA in Victoria. The day was fine although it started out cold in the morning.
A field of ninety nine sprinters lined up for the day with eight MGCC members among them. MGCC members entered five MGs, an MGB GT, an MGB V8, a ZR, a ZS180 and an MGF. The other cars were a Lancer EVO8, Lotus Exige and Hyundai Excel.
A field of thirty members of the 86BRZ Club came out to the C&T sessions with the majority in Toyota 86s or Subaru BRZs, basically the same cars, with a few WRXs and a Forrester. A team of seventeen MSCA members volunteered as instructors to mentor the participants.
Given the large number of participants and a Peregrine requirement to be off track by 4pm it was decided to start drivers from pit lane and not grid them up at the start line to save time. This worked very well for time saving but there is still a preference for many to have that drag race to turn one from a standing start.
It was good to see Tony back again in the MGB GT and Nick getting quicker in the ZR.
Dick and Scott seemed to be having a great dice with the MGF having the straight line speed and the Excel doing well under brakes and through corners. Better brakes or less fear? There were also some bullying tactics reported in form up! All in good fun of course.
John had an issue with the EVO gearbox in the second run and withdrew for the day.
The C&T sessions fitted in well with the sprinters and all feedback suggested they had a great time. It is hoped some will come back to sprint regularly and enjoy their cars for what they are.

Multiclub Hillclimb 4 - August 13th 2017
A beautiful day greeted us for the final Multiclub Hillclimb of the year. Due to this round, not being a come and try event there were only around 80 competitors which resulted in 8 runs completed for the day.
There were only 3 MG club members entered. John Davies in the Evo Lancer was quick but was struggling with some old tyres but still managed a great time with 3rd fastest overall.
I was once again entered in the MG ZS180 and with conditions near on perfect managed a PB and even an off-track excursion trying a bit too hard on the last run, no damage though.
Lindsay Hick and family were once again out in the TC and having the opposite problem to John. with new tyres on the TC Lindsay was getting too much grip off the line but also managed a great time. I believe it was the quickest he’d been for a while up the hill, not sure if it was a PB but must have been close.
Overall a fantastic day had by all with no dramas and everyone home safely. See you all next Year hopefully with my new project. cheers Rob Hall.

MSCA Super Sprint Round 3 2017 from Murray Stephenson
On Sunday 16 July, Round 3 MSCA Super Sprint was run at Mallala. The day started out cold, got colder and ultimately we were blessed with a sprinkle of rain.
A field of seventy one drivers lined up for the day with eight MGCC members among them. MGCC members entered five MGs, an MGBGT, an MGB V8, a ZR, a ZS180 and an MGF. The other cars were a Lancer EVO8, Lotus Exige and Hyundai Excel.
Early in the day some reasonable times were being set although the cold track and strong wind meant few PBs would be achieved. Rob Hall is steadily getting faster in the ZS and Nick Micklem was enjoying himself in the ZR. Tony’s MGB GT looked and sounded great in his first sprint in a while. John and Jason were among the fastest as usual but no PBs in the conditions. When the rain came during the second run Laurie put his car on the trailer as he only had slick tyres for the day and it was getting too exciting. Dick had fun in the MGF but a flat tyre and a spin messed up his run. Scott had the Excel going well and enjoyed the wet as usual harassing some quick cars. Most of our members had a spin or near spin but no damage.MGCC also supplied flaggies for the day. Six of the eight flaggies were from MG with Michael Bugg, Craig Steele, Garry Bolt, Curley, Murray Stephenson and Sarah Stephenson freezing in the bunkers and Berry Treffers as the starter. There were plenty of yellow flags to wave to keep warm and Sarah was dancing to keep warm at her flag point with Sonya Flynn. They didn’t know until the end of the day that a nearby camera was giving race control great entertainment.

Motorkhana, 2 July 2017 from Wes Bray
Round 3 of the State Motorkhana Series was held at the Mallala skidpan on July the 2nd, The event was organised by the Nissan Datsun Car Club. There were 2 representatives from the MG Car Club, Wes Bray driving an MG 1100 and Scott Stephenson driving a Mitsubishi Mirage. Altogether there were 21 competitors representing 11 different car clubs.
The temperature was cold as we drove out to Mallala but it was a clear sky. By the end of competition most competitors had discarded the warm clothing and were competing in shirt sleeves. The skid pan surface was dry apart from one small puddle which quickly disappeared as cars drove through it.
Six tests were run during the day. They were Accordian, Atom Bomb, Bullseye, Reverse Double Loop, Three Lanes and Triple Garage. The first two of these courses are complex and were difficult for many of the competitors to remember correctly. This resulted in a relatively high number of wrong directions. The third and fourth courses were free flowing allowing drivers to achieve a relatively high speed. The final two courses required competitors to plan their own paths around the flags, Some spectators were confused about how two cars could take different paths but neither of them were given a wrong direction.
Scott had a good day. He won his class and was 5th outright. He set a state class record on the Reverse Double Loop with a time of 28.14 seconds. Wes was satisfied with his efforts. There was a Wrong Direction in Accordian when he quite literally got lost after the second flag. To counter this disappointment, he set a personal record in the Reverse Double Loop with a time of 34.02 seconds. At the end of the day he was 7th (and last) in class and 18th outright.
Tim Edmonds was an interested spectator during the early stages of competition and made a presentation to Sonia and Adrian Flynn in appreciation of their assistance at the National Meeting.
MSCA Supersprint Round 2, 18 June 2017 from Rob Hall
We were all greeted to Mallala by a thick fog and couldn’t see the other side of the track. It managed to clear away enough just in time to go racing but the first round was a bit damp and slippery. The day however cleared to a beautiful day for racing and some good times were set.
A good turnout for the MG group with 9 members entered on the day. John Davies once again out in front in the Lancer EVO followed by Jason Edwards in the Lotus who is getting closer to John’s times with a personal best time in the 1.18’s. He even threw in a few spins for the crowd whilst finding the limits of the car. Scott Stephenson was out in the Honda for the day but unfortunately broke a crankshaft pulley so only got one run in but managed to get a drive in a friend’s Excel for a couple of rounds. Craig Reudiger was out in the big XA GT and whilst putting in a good time to start he is still having trouble with the car throwing fan belts off so he also retired early. I was once again out in the MG ZS180 and continuing my little stoush with Dick Manning in the MGF times were close in the beginning but the gong went to me this time putting in a new PB. Lindsay Hick was out in the MG TC and was coming to grips with the extra grip of new tyres and in the process almost broke in to the 1.30’s. Not sure if this was a PB for him but a great effort.
There were 2 new Competitors out for this event Nick Micklem in the MG ZR 160 after doing the sprint at the National Meeting I think it’s safe to say he is hooked and his times kept coming down all day. A fantastic effort in basically a road car with road tyres. The other new member to enter was Jeremy Browne in an MGF (ex Dick Manning and Wayne Hough’s car). Again, he was getting to grips with the car and steadily went faster over the course of the day.
Overall a great day had by all, and also some MG Club members coming out to watch and support the drivers, Steve Bowra and Bev Waters that I know of, sorry if I have forgotten anyone. as usual the Dick Manning support crew was there looking after the old fella and stirring up the competition, great to see the support for our racers and much appreciated by all.
We also had a visit from Peter Mathwin who came out to look and see how the event was run and to pick up his two trophies from the SA/Vic challenge from the week before. Nice job Peter and hope to see you out at the Super Sprints soon.

Multi Club 2 – Hill Climb June 4 2017
Another frosty winter’s morning greeted us at Collingrove Hillclimb. although it was very cold and damp early it quickly dried up and turned into a glorious winter’s day perfect for belting up a Hill. The day ran well again with large numbers entered (116 cars) with 34 come and try competitors included with 5 runs completed for the day.
Due to a lot of events running in June, especially the MG Challenge in Victoria the following weekend there were only 4 Mg club members entered.
John Davies in the Evo Lancer was quick as usual and was in a bit more of a hurry than normal as he had a wedding to attend later in the afternoon and disappeared after 3 runs, talk about fitting a lot in your day. Chris Hunt was entered in his Clubman and proceeded to get better times all day, he’s slowly getting to grips with the handling of the clubman and hopefully see him at more events soon.
Craig Ruediger was once again taking on the hill in the rather large Ford XA GT and with healthy competition between him and myself was giving it all, especially on the last run when along with a bit of sideways action managed to beat my time and win out ----- this time. I was the only MG entered in the MG ZS 180 and had a great time getting faster all day and managed a personal best time on the third run finally breaking into the 37’s.
Overall a fantastic day had by all with no bad stories and everyone home safely. See you all next time with your helmet on.

Multi Club 1 – Hill Climb April 30th 2017
After a couple of weeks of rain on and off, the weather decided to give us a good day for racing up a hill. The sun managed to poke its head out through the clouds enough to warm the track up and allow for some good times. A massive field of 128 cars entered and things ran pretty smoothly all day with only a few stoppages and we all ended up with 5 runs for the day.

There were 4 MG club members entered for the day, John Davies once again out in the Lancer Evo and ended up with the second quickest time overall. Craig Ruediger was back with the Ford XA GT (definitely the biggest and heaviest car in the field), Alan Cardnell in the MGB was doing better each run trying different things out improving on his times as the day went on. And I was again enjoying the MGZS180 having a great battle between a Lotus Exige Cup car in my class and also with Craig in the big v8. I managed to finish 3rd in my class out of 12 cars , all road registered classes were quite large. Craig did a fantastic job and finished second in his class against some pretty quick cars.
Tim Edmonds once again volunteered his services to Scrutineer although he was finding it tough not competing as we all do when we come to watch. we also had a visit from Mike and Jan Greenwood who popped in to check out the racing. Overall a great day of racing with no one having any issues and driving home safely.

Multi Club 3 Hill Climb Sunday 30th of Oct at Collingrove by Peter Coulson
Most of my reports about events start with comments about the weather at the time. The current weather (or indeed the forecasted weather) has a bearing on the likely track and spectating conditions. At Collingrove there is very little cover for spectators and competitors.
I say this because the weather last Sunday was not good. When I arrived it was a bit blowy, but within the hour it was blowing a veritable gale. You could also feel the rain coming in. This meant all the gear in the car, was now stowed outside in the wind and rain!
Not much fun standing around waiting for your turn to run in that. However the air was full of the smell of hot sausage rolls provided by Sandra Cardnell. This made the waiting bearable.
Today's event has a small field of 74 competitors. That meant the turnaround was quick, not giving much time to look around. This my first time competing at Collingrove for many years. I have been there many times as an official and spectator. The talk of the 'start', the 'bowl', the 'bus stop', and the 'wall' had new meaning when you actually get out and race up the hill! Tho I was doing leisurely 44 secs runs, these come upon you pretty quick. The term 'hitting the wall' seemed apt as at times I was about to HIT the wall!!
Rob Hall brought his latest toy, the MG ZS, and after a sighting run proceeded to lay down some good times. He says the times will get better with more time in the car.
The talk of the weather gave the track conditions, a cool rating. Times were improving until just before lunch when the moisture from the sky above appeared.
Tim and Alan were doing reasonably till the track got damp. John Davies was doing well with the Lancer's AWD, but eventually succumbed to the poor conditions.
This was the last round of the SCC series of hill climb's for the year. All the competitors would like to pass on their thanks to all the volunteer officials and helpers that contributed throughout the year. Here we are at Mallala on a bright sun filled morning. The air ws filled with the aroma of warm sausage rolls (thanks to Karen and Sandra), mixing in with the oil and petrol smell! It's the last round of the MSCA Super Sprint for the year. Looks like a good field with many and varied cars competing. The Triumph owners had a grid of cars competing as part of their National meeting being held in SA over the weekend.
It was good to see more MG's than other cars out for this meet from the club. Today we had Berry up in the starters tower flagging us of. Wayne Hough was getting around as an accredited photographer.
As usual there was the paperwork and scrutineering to get through. See pic below.

Rob Hall - 1st time out in new car, MG ZS, ex Hugh Webber car, and got to grips with it and put in some good times.Apart from one major bingle, an Evo, the event went smoothly. The bingle caused a delay as the car was recovered, but the organisers called an early lunch. I didn't hear of any mishaps from our club members, so all had a good event.

Next year's draft 2017 calendar for Motorsport has been developed. Promises to be filled with many opportunities to get those MG's and other cars out and competing.
The first MSCA Super Sprint next year, 12 March 2017, will have a Come and Try component for new sprinters or those seeking some tuition. The C&T section will be managed by MSCA Vic as they help MSCA SA to run its first one. This is a great opportunity to get into sprinting with some tuition and the guidance of an experienced sprinter sitting alongside you for the first two runs. More detail to follow by email and website but if you, or someone you know, want to try sprinting this is your chance. They don’t need to be a member of MSCA or have a CAMS licence. South Australian Hillclimb Championship 2016 by Murray Stephenson
On the weekend of September 18 & 19 the SAHC was run at Collingrove with 105 entries from SA, Vic and NSW.
The weather was not kind! There had been quite a bit of rain during the week prior to the event and there were occasional showers over the two days. Even when there had been longish dry spells there were still two or three spots where water was draining across the track making it interesting. Once you left the track, or the access road, you needed help to return.
The fastest time for the weekend was a 31.09 sec run by Greg Ackland in a car that would normally be under the thirty second mark.
Saturday was clearly the better day with most drivers achieving their best time that day.
Despite the weather it was a fun and challenging weekend trying to get the best out of the cars.
MG Car Club SA was well represented with five members competing, all in different classes, and two of them in MGs.
Laurie Houghton won the Marque Sports 3,001 to 6,000cc class with his best run in the MGB V8 on Saturday afternoon but had a serious misfire on Sunday which resulted in him packing up early.
Lindsay Hick won the Group Lb class in the TC Special with a steady performance all weekend. The two MGs looked great on the hill but it must have been unpleasant in an open car in the rain.
Stan Ward won the Marque Sports 1,301 to 1,600cc class in his beautiful Elfin Clubman C3. Stan skipped two runs on Sunday when it was raining and was pointless trying to do competitive times.
John Davies had some stiff competition in the 4WD Rally Cars class and finished fourth in his Mitsubishi Lancer EVO8. The gap to third was 0.29sec. Clearly the 4WD helped those guys with the class winner finishing eleventh outright and the fastest road registered car on the weekend.
Murray Stephenson finished second in the Improved Production under 1,600cc class in the Honda Civic. The gap to first was 0.02sec. A graceful 90 degree lose on the bowl required some car cleaning on return.
It was a great weekend of motorsport and socialising with a BBQ at the track on the Saturday night and the presentations after the event on Sunday. A number of club members braved the weather to cheer on the competitors each day.

Sunday 28 August, Round 4 MSCA Super Sprint, not cold, not wet, not hot, is this Mallala? The day was cool with a steady breeze but a pleasant day.
A good field of eighty five drivers lined up for the day with ten MGCC members among them. Among the ten MGCC members there were six MGs; a MGB, three MGB V8s, a ZR and a MGF.
Garry Bolt brought out his new car, an MGB GT V8, bright red for speed and sounding great. Must remember to put fuel in it before hitting the track as he was towed back before completing a lap! Otherwise, he had a good day sorting the car and getting used to it.
Peter enjoyed his second sprint steadily coming to grips with the car and getting quicker. He and Alan had a good day chasing each other and getting faster. Alan’s new sway bar was clearly working as he went quicker and the car looked more stable.
John Davies managed to get into the 1:15 being second fastest on the day behind a Nissan Time Attack car doing 1:07s!
Jason was into the low 1:19s and Laurie was having a great battle with a turbo classic Mini Cooper in the high 1:23s. Dick Manning is getting quicker and clearly enjoying himself and Craig Ruediger’s big Falcon is doing well. Dean Hosking’s Toyota was going well but Tim Edmonds’ BGT seemed to be of the pace on the day. Murray’s Honda was entered but refused get onto the trailer on Saturday afternoon so was a no show.
Everyone had a great day with no serious troubles or offs.Berry Treffers was working as starter and a number of club members were there as helpers and supporters including Sandra Cardnell, Steve Bowra, Michael Bugg, Hugh Webber, Adrian Ward, Faye Edwards, Wayne Hough, Murray Stephenson and Jamie Manning.

MSCA Super Sprint Round 3 2016 from Murray Stephenson.
Sunday 17 July saw the running of Round 3 of the MSCA Super Sprint series at Mallala.
The day started off very cold with frost on the ground in the paddocks of Mallala as we approached the track. It remained cool throughout the day which didn’t make for too many personal bests but it was dry and sunny. A good day.
A total of ninety entries started the day including nine MGCCSA members, four of them in MGs. Bev and Tim had the MGBGT V8s, Laurie in the V8 roadster and Dick in the MGF waved the MG flag. Non Marque MG members were Jason in the Lotus, John in the EVO, Craig in the Falcon, Scott in the Excel and Ron in the Clubman.

Round 3 was also MGCC’s turn to provide officials and we thank those who came out to help. Alan Cardnell, Paul Dallwitz manned the flags at turn 7, Steve Spong, and Peter Coulson manned the flags at turn 5, Berry Treffers continued his role as Starter and Murray shadowed the Clerk of Course pretending to be helping.
Another eight club members were observed as helpers, crew and spectators. Thanks to all who came out for a fun day at the track.

Multi Club Hill climb rd2, 3 July 2016 by Peter Coulson

Round 2 of the SCC Multi Club Hill climb series on today. For those who attended rd1, the weather was a significant improvement, just cold but no rain. Arrived at the shed and prepared for scrutineering the competitor cars after they completed their paperwork.
Collingrove is an open area (see pics) and many competitors were getting their cars off trailers, whereas other competitors drove their cars to the event. It’s interesting to see the varied types of cars competing, from competition specials to road registered street cars.
Tim Edmonds made it after doing some work fixing broken teeth in the car’s gear box! (see the pics on his facebook page)
8 runs were run for the day. Each round the times generally got better as the track temperature warmed up. A couple of offs and breakdowns delayed the runs. There was time for a lunch break, during which parade runs were done.
It was interesting hearing the competitors discuss the setup of the cars, and how a couple of PSI difference in the tyres made for a better run. Also the chat about how to get off the line, attack the first corner and different ways of driving the circuit made it interesting for a non-competitor.
Cars lined up in the form up area, and did a ‘burnout’. This is apparently to clean the tyres of dirt, then they approached the start line (see pics). Every competitor and car had a differing launch technique. However a Sprite/Midget didn’t make it to the timing tower, heard that clutch or driveline failure was the problem.

Weather conditions – it’s a bit freshWelcome to Mallala on this very fresh winter’s day for round 2 of the MSCA super sprint series. Arrived at the MGCCSA shed and unloaded the car and prepared for scrutineering. Other club competitors started arriving and preparing their cars.
Lined up for registration paperwork, then get car into line for scrutineering. After car being passed, back to shed and wait for practice. This being my first run in many years and in a new car, I was keen to see what lap time I could get.
By this time many other competitors getting their cars off trailers. It’s interesting to hear the varied sounds of cars starting and/or not starting accompanied by the verbal expressions of their drivers (Laurie?!)
Did the practice session to get a feel for the car and track. Got a 1:45 lap time after doing braking and tyre warming during the practice. Now that the cars and drivers were prepped and ready, off to the driver’s briefing. This is something to be experienced, not only the formal safety and racing rules information, the general banter and good nature of the officials makes for a good environment to go racing. Berry Treffers again provided support as the starter for the event.

We had a few spinners on turns 1 & 2. I hear that John, Jason & Dick may have had some offs. Alan Cardnell was right behind an Excel when it spun and was lucky not to have run into it. Even Laurie may have got a bit sideways at one stage.
It was excellent to see the number of club members who came out to support the motorsport competitors. Our Motorsport Secretary, Murray Stephenson, was unable to compete due to repairing his car, was able to give advice and support to the competitors. I think the fine winter’s day brought out the visitors and supporters to see the action at Mallala.

Mutli Club Hill Climb Rd1 June 2016 report by Rob Hall.
We were all greeted to a very cold and chilly morning at the Collingrove Hillclimb but to our surprise the track was dry and the weather was looking good. However, it didn’t last as the heavens opened just before the first run and made everything a lot harder. The MGCC had a great turn out with 7 competitors and all turned up to brave the conditions.
The competitors were Tim Edmonds in the MGBV8 , Bev Waters in the MGB V8, Laurie Houghton in the MGB V8 Special , Rob Hall in the MGB V8 Special , Alan Cardnell in the MGB 4cyl , Craig Ruediger in the ‘MG’ Ford XA GT V8, and John Davies in the ‘MG’ Mitsubishi Evo.
Great to see Sandra Cardnell up to support Alan although I think she was struggling a bit with the conditions too and also to Peter Coulson who braved the conditions to do scrutineering and support us.
The first couple of runs were very tricky and slippery but everyone made it through successfully, however in the third run my car decided to quit for the day with an electrical short which brought me to a stop halfway up the track. Yes, I was one of those people that all the competitors curse at for slowing down proceedings. Bev did one more run and decided to call it quits and head for the warmth of Home.
The rest of the crew stuck it out and after lunch the conditions improved a lot with the track drying out and the times dropping rapidly. (much to my disgust, I was fastest till then.) Then the competition started to happen with Laurie grabbing the Fastest MG time of the day and a big congrats to John Davies who came second overall by just .33 of a second, an excellent drive in the conditions. Alan was having a great time in the B and even went quicker than ‘The Beast’ by the end of the day.

Hillclimb Mutli Club 3 Report by John Davies.
Round 3 of the Multi club hillclimb was held on 25th October and we were again blessed with good weather and excellent Track conditions.
It was a smaller but still quality field and Craig Ruediger returned with the XA GT for the first time in 2 years and put in a PB on his first run! He continued to improve during the day to take over a further 1 sec off his previous best time.
Dean Hosking bought out his new toy the Immaculate Red MG B V8 and was down into the 39's after just 3 runs. Watch out Tim.
Bev had her V8 back out for the first time this year and obviously had not forgotten where the track went with some excellent runs. I opted for comfort over speed and entered the Subaru again for this Multi club event and made steady improvement on my times in this car.
Fastest MG on the day was again Tim Edmonds in his B GT V8 with excellent times.This event concludes the MG Car Club Motorsport Club Champion award rounds and the points will now be tallied to see who will be crowned 2015 Motorsport Club Champion.

12 July 2015 Multiclub Hillclimb by Rob Hall
Well it was great weather for ducks but not for racing. At the tail end of the week of storms and rain the Collingrove grounds were well and truly soaked through. There were 4 MG club members entered, John Davies in his nice comfortable warm Subaru WRX with 4wd grip which certainly helped. Tim Edmonds and Bev Waters in the MGB GTv8’s and myself in ‘The Beast’ with bags of torque and an open diff resulting in wheel spin galore.
Only 70 entries were received and 62 turned up on the day which was a good effort considering the weather. It was 5 degrees when we arrived and it didn’t warm up much at all. The track did dry out by the second run and things were looking better but during the third run it started raining again with that and some mud that had been dragged on to the course made things very slippery and tricky.
With the rain settling in for the next couple of hours, the four MG members called it quits for the day deciding that safety and a warm home was a much better option and looking at the remaining times from the other competitors that stayed was a good decision as the fastest times of the day by most were in round two.
Hillclimb Mutli Club 2 Report by John Davies
Round 2 of the Multi club hillclimb was held on 12th July as was nothing like round 1.
The forecast was for poor weather conditions and that's what we got. 4 MG Car Club members were competing and it was a battle of the MG B V8's with Tim taking the honours on this occasion.It was a cold and damp day with only 15 cars breaking the 40 second barrier. After run 3 the rain came down again so we all decided to pack up and go home. But we'll be back.

7 July 2015 - Motorkhana Rd 3, Monarto
A surprise turn up, with Jason Edwards normally arriving in his MGTD was now driving his new acquisition, a Lotus Exige CR Race car. A rarity here in Australia. He had only taken delivery of it a couple of days prior so he wanted to give it a test run before the next MSCA Sprint Meeting at Mallala. Slightly different handling than his MGTD I would say, but he is keen to give Sprinting a go. It is good however, to hear that Jason still plans to use his MG and to take both the TF and TD to Perth for the MG National Meeting at Easter 2016 next year.
Rob Hall decided to try out his standard MGB and to rest the ‘V8 Beast’ for the Hillclimb the following weekend. Another transition but performed extremely well, and once he engaged his brain, there was no stopping him. Power is not everything, and again I have to sit behind him in the rankings. Some of the courses were much tighter than normal and I how I yearned for power steering.
Dave Beames continues to drive well in his Delta Special after all these years, and achieved another record time in the ‘2 loops then reverse’ course.
Scott Stephenson enjoyed his drive in the Excel instead of his Mirage, and still gained 7th place outright. He also shared the car with his friend Helen Stephenson who has just started taking part in Motorsport events, and Scott would have no doubt been a great tutor.
Tim Edmonds had the unfortunate, or fortunate misfortune (depending on the way you look at it), when his steering mount broke away at the completion of his first run, and he hit a flag, and as a consequence, the car had to be trailered home. Looking back, Tim said that he thought the car felt a little strange driving up the Freeway. Also, prior to the start of the event, Grant Stephenson asked Tim if he was going to practise, and his response was along the lines; No, if you practise you only break the car earlier. Rather prophetic Murray thought. Tim has entered the Hillclimb next week so I am sure the car will be back on the road quickly.

A Rally Good Presentation Night
On Friday 19 June a group of approx thirty gathered at the clubrooms to hear two highly experienced rally competitors speak of their adventures over long careers in the sport.
Jeremy Browne spoke about his involvement in rallying from the start in a Mini 850 in 1965 and showed us a variety of cars he has driven competitively including a Hillman Imp and Austin 1800. He brought along his 1970 Lancia Fulvia 1.6HF rally car to show us. This is an ex-works rally car which had a successful career before Jeremy bought it and he has continued to compete in it in Australia and Europe. Jeremy has had success as a driver and co-driver but has also contributed to the organization of motorsport as the director of events such as the Classic Adelaide and Coopers Rally SA. He is a very entertaining and interesting speaker and I am sure he could have talked for many more hours.
Ed Ordynski spoke briefly about a number of amusing trophy presentations he has experienced and finished with a very interesting video clip of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (Plug in Electric Vehicle) competing successfully in the Australian Safari. Very impressive and a great test bed for the technology. Ed is also a very entertaining and enjoyable speaker with enormous knowledge and experience of motorsport and the motor industry.
Ed then presented trophies to the class winners from the 2014 motorsport season and the Knox Trophy for 2015 which was won by Jason Edwards. A full list of class winners is posted on the website. To view click here

Master of Mallala – Round 2 by Murray Stephenson
On the weekend of May 23 & 24 one of our younger members, Scott Stephenson, competed at the Master of Mallala race meeting at Mallala in the Circuit Excel category.
Circuit Excel, disrespectfully referred to as “Formula Korean Cab”, is for Hyundai Excels built around 1998 and generally running the 1500cc twin cam engine. Engine and drive train must remain original. Limited suspension modifications are permitted and they must run a control tyre, Federal 205/50x15. Scott bought this car in collaboration with Grant Stephenson with the view that Scott could race it and Grant and Sue’s daughter, Helen, could do motorkhanas while she learns to drive and graduate to Super Sprints. The car was bought as a road car in late January, competed in round 1 on 21 March (finished sixth) and was now ready for round 2. Like many of the cars on the grid this one has done approx 205,000km with only a new clutch to “freshen it up”.
Scott went to a practice day on the Friday to test the revised suspension setup as he had managed to get more negative camber at the front, although not as much as many of his competitors. It seemed OK and he had broken through the 1min 30sec mark for the first time which has not been done by a lot of the field.
In Saturday qualifying Scott managed second alongside the gun of the field, Asher Johnston, in the TAFE sponsored car. Asher regularly wins in a beautifully prepared car which he drives very well and cleanly.
During race 1 Scott broke the class record to 1:29.3 which he held for about a lap before Asher took it back. Later in the weekend Asher took it further, breaking through the 1:29 barrier.
Over the five races of the weekend Scott scored a third place, three seconds and a first, the only driver to take a race away from Asher.
These cars are not spectacularly fast but they are entertaining and reliable. Twenty two cars started the weekend and twenty finished it. One had an engine failure and one was damaged. (At round 1 twenty one started and finished). They bring the biggest field and the racing is furious throughout the field with several fierce battles going on at any time.
Scott has been fortunate to have support from Grant, Sue and Helen, Tyrepower Blackwood, Roadbound Automotive, SA Motorsport Tyres and Raven Customs as well as the family pitcrew.
Having started his racing with the MG Car Club of SA at 14 and competed in the MGA, the Mirage and a borrowed Formula Ford Scott is to be congratulated on his first race victory and his mature, fierce and fair racing behaviour. MGCC members can also take some credit in this as he has been well encouraged and tutored by his fellow competitors at MGCC and MSCA events over his short career to date.Well done Scotty!

For those I haven’t told yet, you can pay the entry fee by EFT on the details below but be sure to identify your payment clearly (e.g. Name, number, round 5) and attach a copy of the EFT receipt to your entry form when you post or email it. If the payment cannot be identified your entry has not been received!
