Prewar & T Type Register report.
“Crowded House” at Ken Fisher’s , St Marys.Well it certainly was crowded house inside the magnificent premises of Ken and Rosemary which we regard as our winter event venue these days.
“Fall at your feet”
Sensationally the statistics are well up on previous meetings 52 signed in plus a couple of Ken’s colleagues, 22 register vehicles that included 17 T Types, 2 Prewar & 3 Y Saloons , check out the gallery of cars in the photos taken by Terry Wright.
A very big thankyou to Ken and Rosemary for their hospitality once again this year.
Ken was pleased to show his latest MGB acquisition, rubber nosed green with tan livery, however even more pleasing , Rosemary likes to drive it ! He’s really fallen on his feet with that one.
“Something so strong”
Something has to be strong to keep these guys away from the meeting given the attendance figures on the night:
1. Peter Auld (over seas again)
2. Simon Ewart (flying again)
3. Brian Forth ( regularity)
4. Bazzica’s (painting their own crowded house)
5. Jenny Schiller ( gone away)
6. Julie & Brian McIver (away)
7. Leigh Richter (baby sitting G Kids)
8. Joy Pearson
9. Ronnie Jillett
10. Don Offler
For next meeting, Arthur , Terry, Buckles, Peter & Bronwyn Micklem
“Weather with you"
Actually it did not rain much , hoods were down on the run down from Blackwood in the T Types, so really the weather was with us and most of you to.
Show and tell them segment was very interesting, presented to us by Ray Finch who found a cast steel plate behind a shed somewhere with the name A Tomlinson Pty Ltd. Only one grasshopper at the meet successfully identified it with abject enthusiasm, one Bob Schapel of course.
A Tomlinson (Alan) was a renown racing driver in the late thirties from WA , he won the 1939 Lobethal Grand Prix in a supercharged 1937 MGTA Special which was held at Lobethal SA. Second was Bob Lea-Wright in a Terraplane Special.
Alan Tomlinson passed away in 2011 aged 95 years , he was known as the “original thinking racing driver” as it was said that he was ahead of his time in motor sport. Well done Ray, a great show and tell em.“Better be home soon"
In timely veritas
Yes another gold watch presentation again this meeting for three lucky members who missed the last fiasco at leigh Richter’s meeting.
All Cash Pearson and his “mule” Willow Willington rounded off the stash of pure gold plastic electronic time pieces that will soon become quite valuable now that Asia is not taking any recyclable plastic bottles from us.
First was Peter Vicar Cundy , a stop watch function for the Winton Regularity in the NA. Second, Bob Schapel to match his antique Casio wind up a quantum leap into technology with the lightweight gold watch, Finally last of all, thank goodness there are no more, Reg O’Malley a veritable timepiece to get him to the meetings on Thai time.“It’s only natural“
The wonderful NA gearbox has been rebuilt and refurbished by two real naturals , Ian Buckley and Lachy Kinnear for Peter Cundy who is naturally extremely appreciative of their expertise and dedication. Completely dismantled and rebuilt with new bushes and roller bearings it looks magnificent and will surely withstand the Vicar’s 7000 revs up the straight at Winton Historics. Great work Lachy & Buckles.
Artfur will be taking off to the Prewar National Meeting at Nambour next month and he will be taking, besides the ND, his photographer of choice Terry Wright. The motive as I see it is to get as much publicity with photographs in as many local papers as he can to increase his chances of an outright win again. Good luck Arthur !The wrap
No, not Crowded House but I need to finish off , a really good night , pity Mike Lyons guest did not turn up, could not find him in the book I am reading either.
The next meeting is at Doc Dallwitz establishment on WEDNESDAY, 4 September at 18 McGowan Street UNLEY.
Yes it is a Wednesday due to late night shopping on King William Rd on Thursdays.
That’s it for this report, need a change of CD to someone else but it has been good.

July 2019 |
13 July 2019
Prewar & T –Register report. 4 July 2019 at Leigh Richter’s Aldgate.“My outta control meeting”
Yes it started well initially in Leigh’s beautifully prepared garage following on from the past two meetings held in the equally prepared exotic premises of messers Martin & Buckley. We must compliment Leigh as it appears that there was a significant makeover from last year’s meeting up in Aldgate, memorabilia rehung, nuts n bolts bins tidied up and I can go on.
Thankyou Leigh for the LED street lighting strung between the trees, nearly as bright as Peter Auld’s TF on high beam in Hillside Road. Thanks also for the red hot gas heaters, superb and appreciated by all on a cool but rainless night.Absent Members
Apologies received from the following (go to the next paragraph if you find this boring) who missed an entertaining but dyslexic run of events: In no particular order of importance, Peter Cundy ( Hamilton Island), Don Walker ( Norfolk Island),Chris & Heather Bennett ( splashing in the River Nile ), Simon Ewart (night flying), David Herbert, Nick Proferes, Reg O’Malley (ankle injury), Brian Forth ( 2 cold), Peter Shipside ( at other car club), John Davies, Pat Mullins, Carl Aiken, Garry Chapman, John Tamke ( home duties ) The Bazzica’s (much 2 cold), Bob Schapel ( recovering ), David Fairbrother, Ronnie Jellett and the Doc Dallwitz ( over eating ).
Now 42 signed in, 14 T Type MG’s , 2 Y Type paraded in the driveway, congratulations for those who drove to the meeting with hoods down.
General Business
I had this formatted and arranged in an orderly fashion before the “Siamese Twins” fresh back from their Bangkok parts exploration trip completely took over the meeting with gold watch presentations to very lucky (or unfortunate) register members.
I speak of Anthony Pearson.com and his “mule” Andrew Willington who screwed the living daylights out of a poor Thai trader for 10 gold plastic watches at 40 baht each ($2.00 AUD). A nice gesture but the quality of the gold can be compared favourably with the weight of a piece of tissue paper. Not withstanding the lucky recipients were BOTR ( to keep the meeting running on time), Artfur ( Sporting Car Club rising star, a reminder of time with us ) TD McNabb ( Alarm function to get him to the meeting at 7.00pm instead of 7.00am ) Terry 007 Wright ( As a present from his son Andrew in Bangkok) Russell Garth ( Another alarm function to keep him off Twitface, time management opportunity). Two in absentia Bob Schapel ( throw away the old casio) and Peter Cundy ( new lap timer for the NA ).
In the middle of all that, the pizza delivery boy arrived and the attention span of members was zilch ! All over red rover I just gave up.
The MG Buscuits
Leigh’s daughter has an amazing biscuit cutter that pumps out MG monogramed biscuits as big as radiator badges and they are excellent, however our boy Leigh completely forgot them last year and nearly did the same again this year amid the confusion and mayhem of the Siamese watch presentation however all devoured successfully.
Faces in the Crowd
Yes indeed The Squire, Don Offler and his mate Ray Finch again this meeting, Geoff And Anne Mclean freshly back from red hot Portugal and Malta with great stories that included nudity by crusty old farts on the beach, The Glassons , Judy and Geoff at long last, Roland Garris complete in WW1 leather flying helmut , Mike Lyons (what can you say), Peter Auld on high beam LED , Trevor Driver has a four poster, no not a bed, a lifter for his garage, Kenny Fisher ,TD on the night but has a new acquisition with a big rubber bumper on the front coming up next meeting.
Other Newsworthy Items
Don Walker (ghost who walks) has put the SA Tickford on the MG Buy Swap & Sell website for sale , sad really he was doing a great job on the restoration, Ken Burke wants members who sell or have sold their register vehicles to update him foe the club register. Mike Lyons has new phone numbers for both his mobile phones (one for each ear) and no, he is not into dealing he says. Ray Finch let it be known that there are TC Specials on the market with history logs, John Ellis has three.
Arthur’s Old Crocks Run with the Sporting Car Club of SA
The first OC run was held 85 years ago from Adelaide central to Glenelg Oval , Diagonal Rd This year Arthur took the ND for which he has become quite famous as it is such a rare MG and coincidentally 85 years ago a 1934 ND and a Wolsely Hornett (1934) participated on that run, which was the year that the Veteran Car club of SA was formed.
Arthur has been acknowledged with a front cover photograph on Wheelspin the magazine of the Sporting Car Club of SA. You may not recognise his face through the windscreen in the photograph because I have it on good authority he has his head close to the rev counter again as is the habit lately, nah, just joking but he is a becoming known as a top Old Crock.
Thanks for your attention, more severe control measures will be implemented at the next meeting I can assure you.Next Meeting
Thursday, 1st August, Ken Fisher’s, 16 Benjamin Street, St Marys.
The annual fully indoor weather resistant meeting , see you there.Safety Farts please in confined spaces !
Boss.

June 2019 |
6 June 2019
Ian Buckley’s J2,TC, B, Garage, Birdwood Terrace North Plympton. “Lubrication it’s the name of the game”Another well attended Register meeting in the impressively clean and ordered garage of our esteemed member Ian Buckley. Plenty to see especially the Prewar J2 under careful restoration. Thanks to Ian and his son Tristan for being our hosts on this occasion which saw 46 members signed in and 16 register vehicles packed down the driveway and yard.
Apologies. Ha, many with excuses some reasonable, others doubtful. G & A McLean (Spain), N Proferes (Sydney), J Bowering, I Purdey ( home- KI ), K Fisher ( family), D Fairbrother (holiday),J Neilson SP (unwell), D Herbert ( back from USA,tired), R Gillett ( too cold for Goldy’s TC) & P Auld*. Lachy Kinnear (?)
*Peter Auld , recently returned from Monaco Grand Prix, was too busy clearing Curly’s missed calls off his mobile phone and a bit tired as well.General Business. Peter Cundy gave an impressive report from the Historic Race meeting at Winton where he scored second place in the regulartity event in the 1934 NA, everything went well for him it appears with a “little” help from his pit crew again this year. Reports that Bob Schapel ran into some trouble with the TC are apparent from the greasey hands featured in one of Terry Wright’s photos.
On the subject of grease, members were rather puzzled at the handout of the Repco sachets that I gave out, not for personal use as some rudely suggested, but with a veiled inference that if they wanted to “grease up” to the BOTR, now was their chance , hello !
On the subject of “lubrication” it goes without saying that members were adequately lubricating their throats as per usual, Ian Buckley’s cleanskin red of which Thane Martin has a few was a really nice drop albeit hidden inside for only the select few to partake.Faces in the crowd. Pleasing to see the great Don Offler again looking sprightly indeed. Good to see back in action three who have had some work medical done on their mechanicals, Don Walker, Ray Finch and David Kemp. Mike Lyons was particularly pleased with his raffle prize and likes the emails. Carl Aitken will be 70 next month, his solution to acquiring a prewar MG is to steal one ! Stan Shephard has a contact in Canberra who is building a replica of old MG No1 also interested in Stan’s book on the car.
Tick tock it’s seven o’clock. Well would you believe that after last month’s report Reg O’Malley actually arrived at 6.59pm , looks like Jackie actually booted him out right on time this month. Early arrivals also included TD McNabb-6.00pm, Doctor Dallwtiz 6-15pm, amazing. However there are two that did much better than that, in fact two days earlier, messers Foody and Ritcher arrived on the Tuesday prior , no body home it seems and not much upstairs either apparently, well done boys.
More news. Now here is breaking news, it appears that a chinaman has a shop in Thailand , Bangkok ,with Lucas Parts (ex WW2) that has been sniffed out by our own AC Pearson. He has engaged our Willow, the “mule” (et Clint Eastwood) to go with him and strip it out of all the loot that he can find and resell of course to ever grateful unsuspecting members, cash money of course. ACP is also looking for a rear LHS mudguard for the TC he sold to the nice fellow in Eden Valley, too late to get one back off Hobbs’ TC now.The Bennetts are off to the pyramids Egypt and will be an apology next meeting, the TF will be dragging the caravan on next year’s Auto tour and on to the MG National meeting they say , more news to come and pictures of hungry camels I suspect.
David McNaughton offered a second hand Molnar hoist from his firm , it may have been snapped up straight away however I did check clearances in Buckley’s garage just in case it would find a good home there. ( many strange looks from the crowd doing that)Russell Garth read out an article from the Advertiser where a poor unfortunate in a Mini on Shepherds Hill Road blew over the limit one day , car impounded, licence gone, then proceeded to do the same thing the next day, car no 2 impounded, licence gone 24 months. However second car is an MG sedan, could have been worse though, he’s not a club member.
Bob Schapel apologised for a mistake in one of his articles, dammed decent of you Bob!Don Walker’s SA started first time after 12 months layoff he says , amazing what acetone does down the throat of the carburettor does , well that’s my take on it.
Mozza Linehan was coerced to driving to the meeting with the hood down, it took a lot of persuading and exchange of emails, however four others did likewise from Eden Hills. The bell, ring a ding ding. Well blow me down and take my money, quite a din that secured the immediate attention of all including the neighbours next door and down the road. Wired up for the occasion by Buckles it was just magnificent and if was not for the 12 volt battery to lug around I would have it at every register meeting so there.
Seriously. A big thankyou to Ian Buckley and his capable son Tristan who provided the back of house service on the night. Tristan is completing his second degree in International Relations. Our member in Papua New Guinea, Craig Ferguson (TC) was able to assist Tristan with a project that he did on behalf of the Papua New Guinea Maritime Board. How good is it that the car club has such wonderful members in varying professions and expertise in a number of areas of industry and the like. Ian’s preparation of his garage was quite superb, the J2 Prewar MG in its magnificent state of restoration was made available for us to peer into every crevice. Ian is doing a very professional job on the car.Real serious. “ Water in the carburettor “
Wife complains to husband that the MG has water in the carburettor, husband responds that it is ridiculous cannot be water in the carburettor. Wife says that the MG has water in the carburettor, husband responds for the second time ,” you don’t even know what a carburettor looks like, where is the car ? “ Wife : “ In the river “
One final word on “grease” The oil slick down the driveway was most apparent on leaving the event, bad luck Buckles I was told not to run degreaser anymore as raffle prizes, stiff.Next meeting: Leigh Ritcher’s , 21 Hillside Drive Aldgate. 4th July.
August meeting, Ken Fisher’s barn, St Mary’s,
September Doc Dallwitz Unley,
October P Micklem Hahndorf.
Cheers, it was another grand night of fun.
Boss

May 2019 |
2 May 2019
Octa-thanes Immaculata Garage , The Walk Coromandel Valley
Yes it was a damp night, but that failed to dampen the enthusiasm for 38 + members to drop into the meeting at “Walk the Talk” , Octa-Thane’s immaculately presented garage, Coromandfel Valley set to rival Jay Lemos Garage in the USA if any of you have seen it on Youtube.
Anzac Day was not that far ago, so the last post was blown for those missing in action who included the following diggers: Messers Forth (again) , Wyatt ( Jordan & Petra war zone), Fairbrother, The Mc Ivers x 2, Von Ritcher, Burkey, Foody (shingles, ouch!) Micklems x 2, Gazza Chapman, Kempy (surgery) , Tickford Twins Goolwa, Mullins wheels, Capt Ewart, Bennetts x 2 & David Herbert (USA) David Herbert deserves a special mention as he will be visiting the Martine Inn MG Museum in Monterey USA which by all accounts Willow Willington will be visiting sometime in near future, however David will not be flying solo across the Pacific to get there this time. Look it up on Google.
General Business:
Well there was a lot of good stuff to report on this week, a few puffed out chests and swelling egos, complaints and general greasing up to the Boss of the Register.
Firstly, Dean Hosking, brimming with pride on driving the newly purchased TD ex Fowler car to a Register meeting for the first time, sadly it was dark and raining but the hood got a good cleansing rinse and all was good, well done Dean. Arthur Rudiger, swelling like a Granite Island penguin, announces that it was his personal influence with the Sporting Car Club that got the MG’s front row stalls position in the display paddock at the Mallala Historics. Well blow me down, everybody was astounded that he has soo much influence in motor sport these days, more to come, read on.
Russell Girth, An interesting announcement that a famous factory of motor sport is closing in Melbourne, that of Harry Leslie “Harry” Firth. Legend of Australian Motor Racing. An appeal has gone out to Clive Palmer , saviour of Australian politics, to purchase the building and let it go to ruin.
Seriously , Harry Firth apart from his fame and successes with Ford Works Team & Holden Dealer Racing in the 70’s , Bathurst 1000 winner x 4 times, an ingenious and talented engineer, Australian rally champion, but even more interesting the driver of a TC Special that in 1959 won the Templestowe Hillclimb in outer Melbourne, also a big performer at the famous Rob Roy hillclimb.
Anthony Pearson.com, had interesting news, as he always does, on the fact that the MGCCSA, T Register has more TC’s attending meetings than the total number of T Types at the National Meeting held this year, the sucking in of air was deafening !
Yes he did have something more relevant, a book on the racing career of Joan Richmond Australia’s most famous woman racing driver. Born in 1905 in Victoria she entered motor racing in the period between WW1 & WW2 , notably won the Brooklands 1000mile race in 1932, in an Austin 7, the first woman to do so. She died in 2007 at 94 years of age but had a stellar career in motor sport, a true pioneer. How do I know all this grasshopper ? Dr G of course, and there is a lot more to read about.
Tick Tock, its seven o’clock. Just remember this for future meetings, Reg O’Malley is quite confused and although he arrives just in time for supper most times, he asked that the time for the starting gun be known to all in advance so that there is no misunderstandings asking for a leave pass at home ,although Jackie is quite keen to see him out on Thursday’s .
Flights of fantasy. Living the Prewar Dream. Lachy Kinnear, almost in tears reflects on his greatest ever, and the longest ride of anyone in SA alongside King Arthur in the notorious ND to Mallala and back. A memorable speech Lachy everyone was enthralled , the King of course smiling affectionately over his humble subject. Must have been good, I hear he, like the Vicar Cundy keeps the tacho on the red line quite often !
Speaking of the vicar, relatively new to historic racing, vicar Cundy was hauled up in front of the stewards after Mallala and given the third degree after failing the flag test. The chief steward was not impressed at all as car 34, MG NA 1934, failed to respond to a red flag out on the track. He and one other were called to the headmasters office and shown the white flag test, both failed miserably we were told by the vicar as was his confession.
Yes there is more, I cannot believe the outrageous stories that come out at register meetings, the latest is quite unbelievable and involves Bob Schapel going into great detail how at an earlier time prior to his marriage to the lovely Maggie, he persuaded her to remove her panty hose in the front seat of his car ! Where was this going you might say ? The incredulous look on the faces of the members was astounding expecting to hear where the pantyhose would end up. Fact, on a bent wire coat hanger, stretched across the twin carburettors on the TC Special. Still in use today both the car and the nylons Bob says with sincere reverence, members were naturally disappointed.
Yet another announcement from the chest swollen King Arthur , cruel I know but I had held him back from delivering the news on another success as I was tipped off by the Octagonal host Thane that there was to be going to be an announcement following Mallala Historics. After seven laps of the course Arthur in the lead car heading the TC’s , was awarded the trophy for the best car on parade or something like that. My little mate proudly pulls from his black leather bag the silver chalice for all to see and acknowledge well done, it was presented by Kevin Bartlett, “KB” of all people.
The only Kevin Bartlett that I knew was the short bald headed selfish rover that played for Richmond in the VFL. How wrong was that.? The real KB is indeed the great Australian racing driver of the 60-70’s champion in 68 & 69, winner of Bathurst 1000 in 1974, career 3 wins from 40 starts. Now you can see that for Arthur it was almost equivalent of meeting Prince Harry or the Queen. Thanks again Dr G.
Former Porsche owner and driver Terry Wright told a very sexist joke involving a wife and a porsche that he had heard recently on the octagonal grape vine, like good grapes it was “squashed” no one thought it was that funny, but at least his photos of Phillip Island were of much greater quality than the joke.
Just a few more quick items, Willow Willington was looking for some TF gold paint for the job he’s doing, Anthony Pearson off loaded a tin plate model TC to one of our foremost MG members, Peter Auld, the Australian Federation Historic Motoring Club Rally in 20230 is open , announce by Christopher Kinney, the King in the limelight again, advised on the pitfalls of selling cars on Historic Registration, Peter Wallace has a contact somewhere who knows someone else somewhere who has some 19 inch wheels hidden somewhere for someone to ferret out maybe, quality somewhat unknown as is the name of that somebody who resides somewhere near Mildura I am told.
Finally The wrap, thankyou to Octhagonal Martoin, helpers ACP.com, the Dominos Pizza delivery boy and the many kind words from the register greasers on the night, a great success really.
NEXT MEETING. Thursday June 6, Ian Buckley, 52 Birdwood Terrace North Plympton.
I am delighted that Ian has nominated for this meeting where we can see the progress on the renovation of the J2 engine and mechanicals in his pristine garage, which may be rivalled only by Jay Lemo USA and Octhagonal Martin in Coromandel Valley, be there it will be good.
Fact ;: 2083 J2’s were made between 1932-1934. Predecessors MG C & D types. Successor, MG P Type. This valuable information was made available by the good Doctor Google, thankyou.
PS. There were also J1’s and J3-4’s I believe.
PPS. The time for this meeting is 6.59pm for 7.00pm, all clear on that come earlier if you like.

The Bad/Good Guys return
Joy Pearson’s , Hawthorndene register meeting
An amazing crowd of register devotees and guests filled the underhouse caven of the Pearson residence on a cool night , but not that cool to see hoods up on the 20 T Types driven to the meeting, noteworthy our Mozza in his green TD.
What’s the buzz ? Well I might say that there were many who were curious to see if the Phillip Island Bad Boys were going to get a severe reprimand for the Rusky like disruptions at the last meeting. Nothing eventuated which was disappointing for some but a relief for the majority despite Thane Martin’s attempt to sabotage general business by ringing Arthur’s mobile.
Notable absentee was Bob Schapel who simply could not face the music. He attended a disappointing Crows match at Adelaide Oval instead, pity really.
Apologies. Messers Don Walker, Peter Auld, Brian Forth (again), Gordon Brice, John Tamke, Chris & Heather Bennett (footy) Bob Schapel (footy tragic) Peter Shipside, Mike Greenwood, Peter Lancaster.
Visitors. Nigel Scott (MGTD), Ian Sweetman ( Austin 7 club), new car club members Gordon Wilson ( MG Y 1949 ) , Carl Aiken ( MGB).
The Statistics:
If you can count two wrecks, one Y Tourer in the fowl shed, and the remaining member cars, it was an exceptional roll up of register vehicles. Maybe there was one more car hidden in the bowels of the under floor space that Anthony Pearson believes will become his Alladins cave in the near future.
I made the count of visible cars, 3 Y’s, 10 TC, 5 TD,4 TF + 1 TC chassis with rusty tub on blocks.
52 signed into the meeting but there were at least 5 more counting the ladies.
General Business:
John Davies outlined MG car club competition events namely the Anzac Day historics at Mallala , the six hour relay there. John and team looking for help marshalling on the day.
TD dramatics:
It seems as though the TD’s have been running hot in the club, literally. Dean Hosking and Ken Fisher have both had radiator problems recently, Parkside Radiators supporters of the MG CCSA , stepped up and repaired the articles to the satisfaction of the owners. Count Geoff Barnes (TB) in with that lot also.
Peter & Bronwyn Micklem’s TD is still giving problems, both were disappointed not to have their TD on the driveway Thursday night.
Just another TD story to tell, Mozza has relied on the “good samaratins”Buckley, Martin & Pearson again to keep his dream machine rolling around the new Blackwood roundabout. Yet again Dean Hosking has had the sump off his new acquisition, the former Fowler TD and discovered anomalies that were not to his satisfaction, who’s TD will be next ?
Russell Garth, now trading as” Coromandel Aged Care Services” to the car club, has just about got the TF back right and going again. Amazing that his 30+ year old restoration was not as perfect as it was supposed to be. Could be that his memory is slipping like the rest of us. Thankyou Russ for your help with our aged member.
Hot or not ? At the risk of upsetting the editor it was put to the meeting if the new magazine cover was “hot or not” ? The thumbs were not pointing skyward unfortunately, however change is inevitable and we will roll with it.
Photographs:
Thankyou to TD McNabb and Terry Wright for their amazing photographs of the cars and personalities on the night, check the website they look stunning on the computer screen.
Ian Hobbs, finally living the dream with his real life running order TC has purchased a cover from Alan Turner I believe who makes them especially for sports cars. It is fleece lined to keep the car warm in winter at Mylor he says. ( bloody cold up there!)
Stan Shepherd lost his photo album but it has been found after a new member unintentionally took it home and called in. All is good now.
Faces in the crowd:
Just some that are good to see anytime at the Register: Mike Lyons, Don Offler, Ronnie Jellet (Murray Bridge) Nick Proferes, David Herbert (Mt Gambier) especially David as he flew his plane up for the meeting and to have lunch with Willow ( The Mechanic)
Phillip Island:
Not a lot was reported from the “Bad Boys”, I am sure that Terry Wright, the sober one, took magnificent photos of the cars, maybe a bit more from Schapel when he resurfaces back into the Register looking for Irving Cup points.
Thankyou to Joy Pearson for a great supper again this year, she is a gem and loves the register night and I must say ably assisted by Wenona & Cara.
Not that Anthony did much , but he did move the cars around I believe.
That’s all folks, I do not have a May Register organised at this time but it will be done when I get the time to ring potential customers. I am starting to worry that the venues are needing to be larger given the numbers attending, maybe the new Bunnings on South Road would fit us all in ?
Cheers, John Bray, Boss Of The Register (BOTR)

The DNA meeting, Hannaford Rd Blackwood
Yes, “Dean ‘n’ Anne’s” very first Register at 62 Hannaford Rd.
Dean, Dean it was super clean, what a transformation it was from what I had seen the week before, there is real space and all those “spares” were packed away in a fashion that would only rival that garage at Torrens Park that we go to.
I should not go on about it but it was a great effort to present the garage for the meeting and any spouse that wants the same result should consider requesting a register night from their relevant partner. Brilliant result Anne!
Not only that the garden and the driveway looked spectacular as well especially from Hannaford Road where the “great wall of Hosking” dry stone walling equals that of the Greek Isles from what I have seen.
You had to get there early to get a spot in the narrow brick driveway but 5 T’s and a NA shunted up tightly, check out the photos by Terry Wright and TD McNabb.
Statistically speaking:
Now at 3.45pm that afternoon we had 36 confirmed, 13 apologies, by 6.30pm hardly any had arrived except John Tamke, John Roach, Suzanne & myself however as he driveway filled to capacity , 56 eventually signed in after finding suitable parking.
There were 19 register cars , 16 T Types , 2 Y & 1 Prewar NA.
Apart from the 56 signed in, there must have been at least 10 other interested spectators, curious onlookers and garage sniffers.
Great to see David Herbert who flew himself up from Mt Gambier, Graham Brown great TC stalwart , Kevin Mills who has stories about the Y and of course the Battle of Britain ambassador Roland Harris in WW2 regalia T shirt. And not to forget Doc Dallwitz fresh from Melbourne and Los Angeles that day & night, unfortunately the unregistered TC was a casualty.

Apologies:
Those who missed out on a spectacular event with great food and conversation were in no particular order of importance: Ray Finch, Brian Forth (again), Ian Buckley (Avalon with the squeeze), Pete Coulson, The Tickford Twins from Goolwa Don & Peter, Nick Proferes, Peter& Di Lancaster, Peter Wallace, The Serial Pest John N, Geoff Goode, Geoff & Anne Mclean. Ken Fisher was but changed his mind.
The Irving Cup:
This year’s winner was a complete surprise to all, and yes it was last year’s recipient Bob Schapel again, a clear winner. The cup was present by a previous champion, Peter Auld, however I was unable to secure the green jacket for the presentation which was unfortunate really, the OP Shop in Blackwood are out of stock.
Results: 1st - B Schapel 17, 2nd - TD Mcnabb, Mozza, Graham Loader 13 pts, 5th - Artfur 12pts, 6th - Buckles 10 pts, 7th - Goldy 9 pts & sharing 8th on 8 pts, Peter Perfect & the Boss of the Register. No correspondence will be entered into, decision final.
I am glad that’s over, far too much stress!
Anniversaries:
Would you believe it, not one but two. Firstly, Marg has stuck by her man for 43 years and gave him a leave pass to attend the register in the TF (1 Irving Cup point at stake here) and you can understand how important it was for Russell to be there.
As I said, behind every successful man is a good woman and an very surprised mother in law. Congratulations Russell & Marg Garth, legends!
Secondly, my little mate Artfur Rueddyger, celebrated to the night, 21 years since his very first T Register meeting which was at David & Joy Pearson’s Hawthorndene.
Arthur has been a great MG club man over that time and contributed highly to the success of the club and the T Register in general, I know that he was disappointed to miss out on the aforementioned cup, but I gave him a bottle of wine to shut him up.
General Business:
I tried to emphasize that it should have a strong beginning, a strong ending, with as little as possible between the two, however it did not quite work out on the night.
The wrap:
Firstly to Dean & Anne, thankyou for a great night that exceeded all expectations lovely food and great ambience in that super clean garage.
Thankyou Anthony for your kind words and for bringing mother Joy along to the meeting, keep it up.
Apologies from me if I left you off the email list and for the misprint of the address in the magazine and website. Dean consulted the owners at #3 Hannaford Rd, they were quite disappointed not to see the cars, but all credit to Mr Superclean Dean, a nice sign was affixed to the kerb just in case.
NEXT MEETING.
The Golds at Murray Bridge , 3 Florence Street Murray Bridge. Start assembling at the Crafers Park n Ride from 6.00pm on 7 March. Usually we start to move from 6.20-6.30pm , takes approx. 56 minutes to the Bridge.
April meeting at Hawthorndene, hosted by Anthony & Joy Pearson.
That’s all folks, see most of you next month at the Gold’s, BOSS

3 January 2019 The hot night at Arthur’s, West Lakes. Happy New Year!
Yes indeed a really hot night to start the Register year for 2019. Temperatures were showing 90 degrees + on those T Types that have gauges. Suffice to say it was a hot run down from Blackwood for Thane, Mozza, Russell & myself with passenger Curly Walker. Unfortunately unleaded petrol vaporises relatively easily in such hot conditions as Thane found out during slow traffic at Glenelg. In true form, Mozza had the hood up on the TD, what can I say?
Attendance was huge, 60 signed in, 19 Register vehicles including Arthur’s two together with a good number of other MG’s graced Huntingdale Avenue. Have a look at the photos on the website taken by David McNabb, really superb thanks TD.

Apologies:
Unfortunately the following missed a great night, noisy in the main but at the same time an emotional one. Missing from the action were, Ken Fisher, David McNaughton, The Ghost who Walks, Peter Wallace, Peter Lancaster, Terry Wright, Trevor Driver, Roland Harris, Nick Proferes, Brenton Illingworth, Geoff Glasson, Robin Gibbs, The Doc Dallwitz & Simon Ewart.
Vale - David Pearson:
David “Daddy” Pearson passed away on Friday 28 December in hospital, he was in his 94th year and we were blessed with the attendance of Joy, Anthony, Wenona, Cara & new husband Matthew in a mini celebration of his life. Our condolences were expressed to his family and the loss of one of the MG Car Club’s greatest members has been felt by many.
David & Joy joined our club in 1979, David served as president from 1985-1988 and he and Joy continued with many years of service. You all will recall the marvellous register nights in the garage at Hawthorndene mostly in the depths of winter.
David took on Historic Registration for the club when it came in, Joy continued in service for at least another 10 years. Both attended National MGCC meetings and are known nationally and world wide in the family of MG. In 1996 they drove their TF 1500 in the FIVA world rally in the UK together with Barb & Alan Griffin in their TD.
David was in the Royal Air Force in the UK in 1942 and worked closely with Bomber Command during the Battle of Britain as a wireless technician. He married Joy in 1948 and it is well known that they have travelled extensively to many locations in the world.
Anthony spoke to the meeting on behalf of Joy and the family, a lovely tribute to his father and best mate for 63 years. In acknowledging his father, he refuelled the members with a case of Lindermans Bin 50 Shiraz 2017 labelled as “ colourful bright and smooth “ which pretty well sums up his dad I would say. David certainly loved his wine whenever I could get a bottle across. Wenona provided some quality sandwiches to supplement Arthur’s cuisine and we thank her for that lovely gesture. Nice to meet daughter Cara and Matt.

General Business:
A special mention for Ian Purdy who made the meeting from KI that day to pay his respects to family Pearson. Ian joined the car club about the same time as David & Joy, he worked with the A Series Register with Anthony Pearson and continued with other MG T Types and has remained a member since.
Craig Fergusson (TC) down from PNG on holidays was a much welcome attendee given that he does not have the opportunity to participate all that often. The T Typers recently had a “coffee” run with Craig and his son Alex to the Red Spot Bakery at Glenelg to freshen him up a little. The “MG Coffee Club” meets often so you might see a gaggle of TC’s & TD’s in the traffic on a Friday morning sometime.
Michael Lyons returned to the fold in the air conditioned MGF, a sensible choice given the heat. Proudly Michael wore is RSL membership badge in honour of David Pearson which was a really nice tribute to a fellow RSL member, ex RAF.
Alexander Hick, grandson of club legend Tony Hick was a welcome surprise and we hope that he might take an avid interest in MG’s following on the Hick tradition at our club.
Breaking news:
For sale or not for sale, that is the question. (depends who you are talking to)
Another TC has been added to the fold. Purchased from NSW with a lot of spares by Anthony Pearson just recently with the aid of his well paid “pit crew” of Thane Martin & Ian Buckley who went across to help him bring it home. Inclement weather did not deter them, rain, hail, lightning strikes, 1500km’s and it ran like a dream, 85 degrees all the way. A tidy unit previously owned by a solid MG CC member in NSW it looks like a sound and tidy machine. Well sniffed out Anthony, did you pay cash?
Appreciation corner:
Thankyou firstly to Arthur for his hard work preparing and supplying great food for the night topped off by fresh fruit just like Mozza’s.
TD McNabb in Terry’s absence, for the photos now on the website. Hopefully we will have two photographers for the next meeting, get well Terry your country needs you 007.
To the Pearson family for their generosity and attendance at a most difficult time in their lives.
To all of you who came to offer your sympathies to the Pearson family, a lovely gesture.
To Laurie Houghton, our editor who do not see often, always welcome and “Inspector of Registers”, Ken Burke, please put in a good report for me.
Next meeting:
February 7, Dean Hosking, 3 Hannaford Rd Blackwood, interesting garage and gardens.
March 7, Brian Golding, Murray Bridge - the usual safari from Crafers, pizzas supreme.
The wrap:
Yes that is all folks, a great start to the year 2019, hope to see you at Dean & Anne’s, February meeting, after that Goldy & Kath’s at the Bridge.
Cheers, Boss

THE MG TC MIDGET The TC was the first postwar MG, launched in 1945. It was exported to the United States, even though only ever built in right hand drive. The export version had slightly smaller US specification sealed beam head lights and larger twin rear lights, as well as turn signals and chrome-plated front and rear bumpers. Over 10,000 were produced, a large number by MG standards. It cost £527 on the home market in 1947. On the eve of the war, MG had offered the TB model which, with a few modifications was to become the first post-war MG, the TC Midget. The chassis of the new car was essentially the same as before, but the sliding trunnion spring mountings had been dispensed with in favour of more conventional rubber bush shackles. This had been forced on MG, as it was unable to obtain the raw materials necessary for the original mounts, this helped to simplify the maintenance procedure, but made little difference to the handling of the car. The engine was the now familiar twin-carburettor, 1250cc, pushrod, ohv XPAG unit. The transmission was also the single-plate dry clutch and four-speed synchromesh unit as had been seen in the TB. The brakes were 9 inch hydraulic units and the wheels the usual centre-locking wires. Despite the fact that the car was so obviously dated, in terms of both mechanical specification and appearance, the MG TC Midget found a ready market. There were a number of reasons suggested for this a lack of other post-war cars, or the familiar design reminding people of the pre-war days, whatever the reason the Midgets success took MG somewhat by surprise. Aware that the more cars they could export, the greater would be their allocation of raw materials, MG sought sales around the world and succeeded in generating a substantial demand for the car. So successful were they that, in the cars four-year production run (until 1949), some 10,000 TC's were built, a substantial number of which were shipped to the USA where they were to generate new enthusiasm for sports cars and motor sport.

Bill Schapel's Red MGTC Special Since 1986 the car has competed in 93 competition events and has 30 outright or class wins, with 26 seconds and 17 third placings. The performance, while just below Bob's supercharged car, is quite startling for a normally aspirated 1366cc engine - due to the car's light weight and Bob's superb skills in engine and chassis preparation. In the past the circuits of Winton, Phillip Island and Adelaide International Raceway saw her in action. Mallala and Collingrove have been good to the little red car and continue to be her most common playgrounds, but in 2004 Sandown and Rob Roy were also visited to good effect. Has lapped Mallala in 1:27s and Collingrove in the 37s. |

MG TD In 1949, a replacement for the TC was announced. It was not, as one might have expected, a car with a totally different, modern appearance, but yet another Midget in the familiar mould. The TD Midget, while it certainly had the appearance of a Midget, had much which was different under the skin. The TD had a completely new chassis, which had been developed from that used in the Y-Type saloon. In 1950 the TD MkII was introduced, produced alongside the standard car, with a more highly tuned engine with 8.0:1 compression ratio giving 57 bhp (43 kW) at 5500 rpm. It also featured twin fuel pumps revised dampers and a higher rear axle ratio. An example tested by The Motor magazine in 1952 had a top speed of 77 mph (124 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 18.2 seconds. A fuel consumption of 26.7 miles per imperial gallon (10.6 L/100 km; 22.2 mpg-US) was recorded. Nearly 30,000 TDs had been produced, including about 1700 Mk II models , when the series ended in 1953 with all but 1656 exported. 23,488 were exported to the United States In 1998, the rights, intellectual properties and trade marks associated with the production of MG TD are acquired by TD Cars Sdn Bhd in Malaysia to reproduce the TD series as TD 2000 |

MG TF Something had to be done about the flagging sales of the TD, but all that could be done at the time was to give it a facelift. Hence, the MG TF Midget was introduced in 1953. Essentially this car was the same as the TD, having the same form of chassis, suspension, brakes, steering, engine, and transmission. The TF was essentially a stop gap car to keep production going until the new MGA would be approved for production by the BMC hierarchy. The TF launched in 1953 was a facelifted TD with a sloping grille and the headlights in the wings. In 1954 the engine was re-designated XPEG and enlarged to 1466 cc by increasing the bore to 72 mm giving 63 bhp (47 kW) at 5500 rpm and the car designated the TF 1500. The last cars were made in 1955 when it was replaced by the MGA - approximately 9600 were made including 3400 of the TF 1500 |

Bill Schapel's MG Y Tourer Lou passed on his white Y Tourer to Bill around 1990 and the car has seen plenty of action on the track and the road, winning trophies at two Natmeets in speed events, but with a patina rapidly approaching "scruffy" it has not troubled the scorers at Concours! Nevertheless a useful and much-loved old girl, she has carried Bill and Jenny's daughters about in style from childhood to adulthood and continues, with an engine originally prepared for racing in Bob's TC Special, to surprise any unwary MTT buses, even showing a clean pair of heels to most road-going TCs or TFs. Has now been re-painted and upgraded. She deserves it. |

MG Y Type 1948 Current owners: Graham & Pat Loader, Chassis No: 1201. We had sold our Escort ( more competition orientated ) and were looking for a car ( possibly a Magnette ) for use in picnic type runs and were offered this Y Type by another fellow MGCC member. He had owned the car for many years and was in the process of restoring it ( engine had been reconditioned and the body painted ) but didn’t’ think he would have the time to finish as it had mostly sat in a shed for the previous 9 years. We went and had a look not even knowing what a Y looked like, we wiped off the dust, Pat loved the look of it and we purchased it in May 2003. After many hours of work the restoration has been completed and it hit the road in Sept 2005. We are now looking forward to joining in the numerous runs available with the club. |
