The Australian Annual Kimber run 2018 - A DAY AT THE NATIONAL MOTOR MUSEUM

This year the MG Car Club of South Australia can report that the 24th running of its primary event of the year in terms of numbers of MGs taken out of their respective sheds, garages or car ports accounted for 102 cars from TCs up to the modern ZR / ZS / ZT's.

All the MGs and their passengers assembled at Edwards Park and were given the traditional “Ladies & Gentlemen, start your Engines” at 09.30 and were waved off by the Club’s President - Adrian Ward.

As this event coincided with Remembrance Day, prior to departure a 2-minute silence was held to remember the end of the First World War 100 years ago, whilst we were all assembled together. By 11am most participants would be located at various points along the road to Birdwood. This year’s destination.

This was the second time to the National Motor Museum; however, this year’s run was a different route to last year. It was not a very long one but there were some very twisty roads along the way to enjoy in a MG.
The lawn at the rear of the Museum was lovely green and the weather was picture perfect which added to the atmosphere of a perfect day for a picnic with plenty of shade to stay out of the sun.
This year the catering was provided by Leanne Barker of Leas Eats, who together with her husband John and helpers, put on a fantastic barbecue for us and made sure no one went hungry. Well done.

From what I could see and feedback I’ve received since, all had had a wonderful day and people were in no hurry to head home, just savoring the enjoyment of a pleasant day out in these wonderful old English cars with like-minded people of all ages, to me the smiles on the faces was what made the whole exercise so much fun to be involved with.

The National Motor Museum has put a lovely piece on Facebook showing all the cars in their glory parked on the lawn behind the museum. Please have a look.

Next year the Kimber run will be renamed the Cecil Kimber Run to avoid confusion. Some new members where under the impression we were driving to Kimba which deterred some from entering.

We will not be going to the National Motor museum in 2019.

These events do not happen by themselves and I’d like to thank those members who assisted in the background to help make it a success and those members who assisted on Sunday with setting up, checking in and marshalling.
A special thanks to Dick Manning, whose help is greatly appreciated, my daughter Rebecca and my wife Pam, who between them, compiled and bound all the run books, bags etc. Sam Pirrotta from the RAA, (read Sam's report) for providing us with a support vehicle in case of any breakdowns (none reported) and MG Sales and Service for providing a box of spare parts, just in case.

The Australian Annual Kimber run 2017, Adelaide South Australia.

This year the MG Car Club of South Australia can report that the 22nd running of its primary event of the year in terms of numbers of MG's taken out of their respective sheds/ garages or car ports accounted for 125 cars from TC's up to the modern ZR; ZS, ZTs, 2 new MG6’s and 3 Mercedes.

This year the MG's and others assembled in Edwards Place on Anzac Highway, a new venue for us, and where flagged off at 9.30am by the Club’s President, Adrian Ward.

This year the run was a little different from previous years in that we were not stopping for morning tea.

The run was approx 128 Kilometers via Bethany, Cudlee Creek, Williamstown, Lyndoch, Kersbrook, Springton, Mount Pleasant to Birdwood to the National Motor Museum for a barbecue lunch arranged by the local CFS, Lutheran Church at the rear of the museum with access to the museum.

There were some nice stretches of road where the cars could stretch their legs.

At the museum it was BYO seating and drinks, both alcohol and non-alcoholic.

It was a lovely day, perfect weather, nice food and plenty of shade and the ability to mix and mingle.

Due to many late entries, which we tried to accommodate, the statistics in the run book became irrelevant as those stats where from entries received up to 31 October and we received 26 more after that date.

This was my first role as Co-Ordinator but from what I could see all had had a wonderful day and were in no hurry to head home, just savoring the enjoyment of a pleasant day out in these wonderful old English cars with like-minded people of all ages, to me the smiles on your faces was what made the whole exercise much fun to be involved with.

2016 Kimber Run Final Report.

The 2016 Kimber Run was held on the 21st of August. The weather turned out to be fantastic on the day, no rain and about 16 degrees, perfect weather for a run through the hills and on to Murray Bridge.

Entrant numbers were down considerably on last year with only 96 cars and 189 people entered, about 6 cars did not turn up on the day. When I did the budget I was expecting a similar number to last year and consequently money wise things were very tight with extra cost for lunch and the plaques due to lower requirements. The end result will probably be a small loss to the clubs finances.

We had a good run up the freeway to Hahndorf and on to Nairne for the morning tea stop. Thanks to the Nairne football club and in particular Kate Howie for her help.

One minor mechanical problem at Nairne required the expertise of our RAA patrolman Nick when the heater valve on an MGB decided to leak a bit of coolant onto the distributor.

The run from Nairne to Murray Bridge along the Old Princess Highway was great , the road is in really good condition.
Cars started to arrive at the Murray Bridge Racing Club around noon for lunch, the bar was set to open for drinks at 12.30 pm but some members convinced the staff to open a little earlier to quench their thirst.
Michael Schubert of Dukes Gourmet Catering provided lunch this year and I think most present would agree it was excellent. There was a few complaints regarding the time taken to be served, this was mainly due to 2 of Michael's staff failing to turn up on the day.

Our Patron, Ed Ordynski brought us up to date with the club facebook page and I welcomed two entrants all the way from Vancouver Canada, Brad and Shannon Sharp, who are friends of members Graham and Linda Byass, (Graham kindly handed over his MGZR to a Brad who is used to driving on the wrong side of the road)

We had the following cars on the day, MGB 53, MGA 10, MG TD 7, MG TF 3, MG TC 3, MG ZR, ZS & ZT 6, MGF & TF 6, MGY 2, MGA Twin Cam 2, MGC 1, 1 Mazda Ute, 1 Mitsubishi Van, and 1 SLK Mercedes.

KIMBER RUN UPDATE June 2016

WE NEED YOU

The Kimber Run is only 2 months away, as of 12th of May we only have 28 cars and 52 people entered, (a long way to go to reach last years number of 89 cars and 156 entrants).

This is the major MGCCS run for the year and your support in needed. So please book in ASAP and ease the stress on the poor organiser.

KIMBER RUN 2016 1st NOTICE.

Hi all members, planning is underway for the 2016 Kimber Run.

Because of the weekender being held this year in October and Torrens Parade Grounds commitments with the AFL, this year’s run is scheduled for Sunday the 21st of August. The destination is Murray Bridge for lunch with a morning tea stop along the way.

Entry forms (click here to download) will be on the club website and in the magazine in April. Please put this date in your calendar as this is the 60th anniversary of your club and it would be great to see a record roll up to celebrate this important milestone. Please get your entries in early to help me to finalize arrangements for lunch etc.

All MGCCSA members are welcome to attend this event regardless of the vehicle driven. Owners of MG’s from other clubs are also encouraged to attend.

KIMBER RUN 2015 REPORT.

The 2015 Kimber Run was held on the 1st of November. We could not have wished for better weather for the event. Entrant numbers were down on last year with 141 cars and 264 members compared with 186 cars and 316 members last year. I suppose it is a sign of the times with our membership gradually reducing and costs for the event increasing.

I have been on 10 Kimber Runs in my time as a club member and from memory 9 of these had a major section through the Adelaide Hills, I thought it might be time for a change so this years run was on mostly flat roads including the reasonably new Northern Expressway. Judging by members comments this was a welcome change.
We had an enormous morning tea at Freeling and contrary to some comments it was cheaper than last year. After Freeling the run headed towards Kapunda before turning off to Greenock, Nurioopta, Seppeltsfield, Stonewall and finally ending at the Tanunda Show Hall. This was the 2nd year at Tanunda and Malcolm and Helen Filsell of Barossa Country Kitchens again provided an excellent meal, complimented by a good selection of wines, beer and soft drinks arranged by Gabriela White of the Gomersal Winery.

John Sadler was a special guest of member Peter Cundy below is John and Peter’s story.
We have a special guest with us today – John Sadler who travelled with Peter Cundy in his red TD. Really I should say “their” TD. John was the original owner of the TD in Norwich, England and Peter tracked him down via the car’s MOT Certificate that Lawrie Foody gave him when he purchased the car around 10 years ago. He wrote to the address in England and received an email response from a neighbour who put Peter in touch with John. John now lives in Melbourne and travelled over to Adelaide this weekend to join the Kimber Rally.
John said to Peter “Thank you for caring about my old car that I wish I had never sold. However at the time with two young boys it wasn’t a practical situation. I bought the car from a small dealership in South London, the name of which eludes me at the moment. I had always wanted a TD ever since my uncle had two of them, a 1951 and a1953 model before he died. I bought the car in 1968 and brought it out when I migrated in 1973. I had been a deck officer in the British Merchant Navy for almost 10 years but containerisation had killed the great life at sea, so I became a 10 pound Pom.
Furthermore, I met Mike Greenwood on a Christmas cruise aboard Dawn Princess in 2014. Seeing the MG badge on his shirt we started talking, and of course your name came up. I have written a couple of novels that Mike was interested in and he thought you might like to read them as well.”

KIMBER RUN UPDATE No 4

Your Club Needs You.

Time is running out for entry for this years run, and as of now we have a rather disappointing entry list of 62 cars and 115 people compared with last years list of 162 cars and 314 people for lunch.
We all have busy lives and more often than not things we plan arrive far too quickly. The cut off date for entries is Friday the 9th October to allow time for the printing of the Kimber Run Plaques. Entries after that date will be accepted but cannot be guaranteed a plaque or listing in the run book.

As mentioned in my last update this year is the 50th anniversary of the MGA we have over 70 in the club. As of the 6th of September we only have 7 “A” s’ entered, I hope we can do better than that.

As the costings for this event are based on a minimum of 300 people for morning tea, lunch and run plaques etc. unless we dramatically increase registrations this could be an expensive drain on our clubs finances.
So please support this special event and send in your entry forms, which can be, found on the club web page and in the club magazine.

KIMBER RUN UPDATE No 3

August 2015

Entry numbers are going reasonably well for this years run. We have received 32 as of the last week of July. We would like to reach at least150, so if you have not entered please support this event and get your entry in A.S.A.P.
A special request to all MGA owners, this is the 60Th anniversary of your car and it would be fantastic to see a large roll up of “A”s’ at this year's event, we have over 70 registered at the club and only 12 entered last years run. The Plaque and Run Book will feature the MGA so they could become sought after memorabilia in years to come.
As mentioned in the last update Rae and I will be away during August so confirmation of your entry will be sent early September.

KIMBER RUN UPDATE No 2

Planning for this year’s event is well underway. In this issue of the Magazine you will find the entry form for this years run or you can download it, print and mail, or fill in electronically and email from the club website. Please get your entry in early to enable the organisers to finalise arrangements with the caterers etc. We will be leaving from the Torrens Parade Grounds as usual, travelling north for morning tea and ending at Tanunda Show Hall for lunch. The Run will be approx. 110 kms.

Please include a stamped self-addressed envelope with your entry or your email address in LEGIBLE writing for the return of your entry confirmation.
There has been a slight increase in the cost this year due to increases in the hire of the Parade Grounds and Tanunda Show Hall. Catering costs for morning tea and lunch remain almost identical to last year.

Raelene and I will be away most of August, so acceptances will not be sent out during that time but I will send them early September.

This year is the 60th Anniversary of the MGA, last year we had only 12 A’s so lets see all of the MGA owners make a special effort and at least double that number.

Planning for this year's KIMBER RUN on the 1st of November is under way. Entry Forms will be in the July Club Magazine or you will be able to down load if from the website early July. The cut off date will be Fri-day the 9th October so PLEASE get your entries in early. Plaques will be assigned on a first come first served
basis. I anticipate costs for this year’s event will be similar to last years run and will confirm pricing and more de-tail on the run in the July magazine. After many favourable comments, this year we will be again be using the services of The Barrossa Country Kitchen and the Tanunda Show Hall.

Kimber Run 2014 Final Update.

 

The ingredients of this year’s commemorative run.
154 cars. 288 members.
A scenic route, winding through the Torrens Valley and then onto the Barossa.
Perfect weather. Great food. No major breakdowns.

Late September, early October, I was getting a little worried, the venues had been selected and locked in with a rough estimate of numbers and we did not have nearly enough entries to cover costs.
After several anxious weeks it all came together and I could not have been happier, your support as usual should never be underestimated. Thank-you everyone.

After a 9am start it was off up along the Gorge Rd through the Torrens Valley to our morning tea stop at Mt Pleasant which was supplied by the local Red Cross Chapter, and although I was a little disappointed in their presentation, I did not have any negative reports from any one.

We then set off for a leisurely drive through the Barossa Valley to our lunch venue, held at the Tanunda show hall and to add to the atmosphere we had 8 MG’s on display inside. Malcolm Fisell and his team from Barossa Country Kitchens, cooked up a storm, we were treated to a first class meal, with no restrictions on amounts. I think personally that it was one of the best meals we have had for a number of years.

Gabriella White from Gomersal Winery, provided drinks at a very good price and also supplied the gift packs presented to our support groups.

Our mechanics had a very easy day this year, to my knowledge the only problem was a blown head gasket in Wayne and Geraldine’s MGA, the problem appeared at Birdwood and a very quick decision was made to return home (downhill all the way) and re-join us at Tanunda in their big black four wheel drive dog transport vehicle. I am happy to report that all worked out as planned and their MGA is now back on the road.
Lindsay and Karin’s MGA was the only other worry, reporting a “funny noise emanating from the mechanical bits and pieces of their car” I was advised they too made it home safely.
As usual the top represented model on the day was the MGB with 79 entries, followed by MGBGT x 12,
MGA x 12, MGF x 10, MGTD”s x 7, MGTF x 7, MGZS x 4, MGC x 3, MGTC x 3 MGY x 2,
MGA Twin Cam x 2, MGRV8 x 2, MG1100 x 2, MGZT x 1. Porsche x 1 Lexus x 1 and Ford x 1
Last but not least our 2 RAA vans and 1 Mazda Ute.

That common colour RED, again topped the list (53) down to 2 Demask, 2 yellow 2 cream and 2 green/white

This was my second year as organiser of this club event, it could not have come together without support and encouragement from my wife Raelene who had to put up with my concerns, and at the same time live in a house that resembled a warehouse, full of Shannon’s bags, run plaques, generous donations from special people, piles of run books and loads of cardboard boxes.
This year I have had valued support from Wayne and Geraldine Hough, Berry and Rebecca Treffers, Leyland and Gloria George, Bob and Shelley Bazzica, Maurice Lineham - (Design of the Plaque), Peter Williams - (Design of Run Book Cover), Andy Carroll - (glasses and wine pourers), Blackwoods - (bottle openers) and Shannon’s who always support us.
Finally, to all the members who attended, those who sent emails and the many who took the time to approach me or my team to let me know that they had a good day, special thanks.

2013 ANNUAL KIMBER RUN.

The 2013 Annual Kimber Run was held on the 3rd of November. We were fortunate to have a glorious day for this event with light cloud cover and a max. temperature of 23 degrees.  We had 166 cars entered carrying 322 people including Adam Pickering and Clinton Wood, patrol men from the RAA along with Simon Wenzel from Supaloc Racing as back up for the run.
Of the 166 cars entered 162 were MG’s with one Porsche, one Mazda Ute and two RAA vans. After a little confusion at the Torrens Parade Grounds (we had to share the site with a number of cars belonging to the Multicultural Society) we set off at 9.00 am for the run to Maccelsfield for morning tea, the venue provided by the local football club and morning tea by the netball club.

Leaving Maccelsfield at around 10.30 am we proceeded toward Victor Harbor via Meadows, Strathalbyn, Ashbourne, Currency Creek and Goolwa with the first cars arriving about 12.00 noon. Parking at Victor was in the Foreshore car park kindly provided by the Victor Harbor Council for our exclusive use at the very reasonable cost of $50.00 for the day.
Lunch was organized at the Hotel Victor directly opposite the parking area.  Our thanks go to the management and staff for a great meal. We completely filled the Dining Room with 290 people and the extra 32 members were accommodated in a separate area.
Participants were welcomed by myself and the President, our Patron Mr. Ed Ordynski entertained us with a very interesting presentation after lunch.
Mechanical problems experienced by the participants were few with only two incidents reported to me. One being the loss of a front wheel on an MGB and the other a burst coolant hose on a MGRV8. After a search for the errant spinner by the backup crew and owner of the vehicle he was on his way, unfortunately he did do some damage to the exhaust, lower front mudguard and a reasonable flat spot on the front disc.
The RV8 I understand was towed to Victor from where it was trailered home. I hope that they still enjoyed their day with us in spite of their problems.

THE AUSTRALIAN ANNUAL KIMBER RUN 2012 – AFTER THE EVENT

ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

 

This year the MG Car Club of South Australia can report that the 17th running of its primary event of the year in terms of numbers of MGs taken out of their respective sheds/ garages or car ports accounted for 170 cars from TCs up to the modern ZR; ZS & ZTs. All of the MGs assembled in the City at the Torrens Parade Ground and were given the traditional “Ladies & Gentlemen, Start your Engines” at 09.00 and were flagged off by the Club’s President, Wayne Hough.
The main theme for this days run was in celebration of  50 years since the first of the MGB’s came off the line in Abingdon, and of the total contingent on today’s run some 101 were B’s.
What a wonderful sight to see them all just as The Late Cecil Kimber would have liked them to be, lovingly cleaned and finely  tuned for a spirited run into our Adelaide Hills and onward to the well-earned morning tea presented by the local ladies auxiliary at Gumeracha and before climbing back into their MGs for some more driving experiences passing through many small country towns into the famous Barossa Valley for a sit down luncheon at the aptly named Vine Inn at Nuriootpa .
At the moment a huge number of the paddocks are fresh green in colour and in a few weeks’ time these will turn to a more golden colour before harvesting begins. This was interspersed with the sight of the bright green of the new leaves coming out on the trellised wires supporting the vines for this year’s vintages.
The roads to start with, on leaving all the traffic lights behind in the outer suburbs of Adelaide made for plenty of lower gears and many sharp corners as the roads followed what would have been dirt tracks in years past but tended to follow the original design. So we climb slowly but surely before descending again into several deep gullies and up the other side, so brakes and gears now come into play. Fortunately the day is cool in the vicinity of 12 to 15 degrees Celsius with the promise of mid twenty’s later on, so lots of the machines had hoods up at the start.
By the time Jan & I got to morning tea drivers had hoods down and hats on, permission no doubt granted or agreed to between driver and navigator. The cars were all assembled on the oval in front of the grandstand with small plates of homemade cakes and sandwiches “one per person per trip” & cups of tea or coffee to wash it down with.
Once fed the drivers & navigators at their own discretion were free to start on the next leg of the journey totaling some 71 miles ( 113 Kms).  The roads now started to straighten and the terrain nowhere near as severe as before, gradually running down into little historic towns and winding along beside running streams, such lovely scenery with lots of green feed for the sheep and cattle.  Mind you the MG’s by now were nicely warmed up and overdrive has been selected where available.
The route map had the cars turn off the normal route to the township of Nuriootpa onto by-roads which led to a wonderful panoramic view over a huge amount of the Barossa Valley, Mengler’s Hill, then a steep drop down the escarpment and on into Nuriootpa ( a local Aboriginal word meaning “meeting Place). Once the cars arrived and parked the participants on this run headed inside the Vine Inn for a well-earned chance to catch up with friends and to make new ones. As you can imagine seating 315 people in one room took some doing but the staff at the Vine Inn have done similar numbers before, but I think our number was still a test!
From what I could see all had had a wonderful day and were in no hurry to head home, just savoring the enjoyment of a pleasant day out in these wonderful old English cars with like-minded people of all ages, to me the smiles on their faces was what made the whole exercise so much fun to be involved with.

AUSTRALIAN ANNUAL KIMBER RUNS
In September 1962 the first MGB came off the assembly lines in Abingdon in the United Kingdom.
This Kimber Run is to celebrate the 50 years since this occurred. For this reason we are extending a special invitation to as many owners and drivers of MGBs as possible to come along and be a part of this event.
Over 500,000 “B”s were produced in ever changing models initially there were 8 colours on offer; all told there were some 53 colours plus the number of MGBs repainted at a later point
Who said that the Red ones went faster???.
The start this year will be at the Torrens Parade Ground, Victoria Drive in the centre of Adelaide itself. We are very fortunate to be able to utilize this ground as it is becoming difficult to get suitable locations given the number of MGs attending this very popular event. There will not be any breakfast at the start so have a cup of tea or whatever before you leave home. There are toilets available at the start if required.
I can assure you that this year’s run will be an enjoyable run along some roads you know and some new ones as well. Quite a bit of gear changing to start with but once we leave Birdwood the countryside is a lot flatter and the roads are straighter. Please be patient if you have slower cars in front of you there will be some passing spots eventually if you need to pass.
 I suggest you plan to arrive by 8.15 am or so to allow for your registration and fixing the Kimber Run plaque to your car. Plus it gives you a chance to have a look at some of the other MG’s and catch up with old acquaintances from previous events before the departure for the morning tea to Gumeracha and then on to Nuriootpa for the sit-down lunch.
As part of your registration you will be given a run book which included locations of all the public toilets along the way.

Next year I will be handing the baton over to Allan Semmler who has kindly agreed to take on this very rewarding role.
So to be a part of this year’s run please complete the attached Entry Form and send it in with a self-addressed and stamped envelope and I will send back your acceptance advice with your Plaque Number, the quicker you do the lower the number!.
Can I suggest that you make your own decision as to where you intend fixing the plaque, do not cover up the front number plate though.
